Will an NA 89 engine fit in an 88 Vert?

Hey all...

I've found a great 88 convertible for sale, but has a seized up engine and has sat for 6.5 years. Everything is pristine except the engine. I've also found a parts car with everything (some body damage) and it's an 89 coupe with the same 13B engine. Will the 13B fit in a 88 from an 89?

Thanks!

Yes and no. The 88 is a S4, and the 89 a S5- they changed a fair bit between those years. It will physically fit, but you'll need to do a whole lot of re-wiring to make it work properly as a whole. Though I think (someone else who knows more will have to confirm) you could possibly swap in the short block from the S5 in place of the seized S4 and hook up all the other hardware from the original engine- I don't think they changed it much if at all (at least as far as the interfaces go).

That's what I was thinking... was using only the shortblock from the 89... probably nothing else. Also, the engine in the parts car has been backfiring a little bit and popping... is that something to worry about or is that probably from a bad spark plug?
