Will a 90 GXL tranny fit a 1987?

I have a 1987 NA manual, and I need a new transmission, and one I'm looking at, the guys says he thinks it's from a 90 GXL. It's a manual, but I don't remember if he said it was turbo or NA. Will that year fit my year? And if it's turbo, can that be used where a NA tranny got pulled?

You should do a search on this subject

But, in over view:

Yes, the (S5) '90 Tranny will fit your (S4) "87. Just need to transfer the mounts that bolt to the tranny and also bolt to the frame from your '87 to the '90 Tranny. I just did this a couple weekends ago, swapped a '91 tranny into my '88 Vert.

T2 Tranny, more difficult answer. Yes you can, but you'll need a whole lot more than just a tranny. So, again, do a search. You'll find all the information you need.

Thanks man. One "yes" and one "maybe" is a lot better than one definite "no".

Anyone have any knowledge or experience with the T2 question?

If its turbo all you need is the trans flywheel clutch and an automatic driveshaft it will bolt up to your stock differential that is to say if you cant get the turbo2 driveshaft they are sometimes harder to come by than the trans

It's easy to tell, just look at the bellhousing, if the bell housing is bolted onto the transmission, it's a turbo, the NA's were molded all together, transmission and bellhousing.

No problem, I had the same question long ago I believe the turbo tranny's are ribbed as well, and the NA's are smooth, let me get a pic of my turbo tranny for you.

and here's an NA tranny compliments of mazdaspeed7's response on the location of the nuetral switch.

Notice the rather extreme difference between the bellhousings? Dead give away

Oh, that's where mazdaspeed circled the neutral switch, just to show where the location of it was, he posted that picture under a thread dealing with screwy idle problems.
