I have an 86 rx-7, and I was thinking about putting a 20b into it. I was wondering if it would be able to pass ca smog, because if it can't, I might not do it.

And if you're good at welding, move the vin over from the smogged car and swap plates. Should be a lot easier than swapping 13b and 20b, drivetrain, exhaust b/w cars.

This one meets Vigrinia emissions requirements running 10psig on stock parallel turbos and a cat, cranking out well over 400bhp. I'm not sure how that Kalifornia visual inspection works, but I think that you can get a waiver of some sort.

Theres lots of info on cali smog laws concerning engine swaps at www.v8rx7.com Bottom line, as long as the engine is newer than the car its going into(not a problem with a 20B FC), and all of the original smog equipment from the ENGINE is present, it will pass visual. But it also has to meet the standards of the year engine it is, not chassis year.

As long as the vehicles emission equipment is in tack then there should'nt be any problems. Your retaining the vehicles equipment not the engines. Meaning if you put a newer motor that has no smog pump into a car that did you'll have to rigg one up to comply.

in california (espically bakersfield) not a chance in hell.

In California, that 20B will have to have been certified in a California approved production vehicle, newer than your car.
No excuses, no exceptions.
I will bet you can make it pass by having as many smog things hanging on the engine, as are on the 13BT decal under your hood. The dummies won't even notice the extra rotor.
It is fairly easy to pass the sniffer test.

Someone I know went that route successfully.

your only chance would be to go to someone that has no idea what a rotary engine is, run it as lean as you safely can, have good cats and the rest of the smog ****.. even then it is still questionable though

No way in hell it's going to pass Cali emissions due to the underhood engine visual inspection.

The 20B (and Cosmo) was never certified for emissions in California, so argue all you want about retrofit engines, it will never pass a proper inspection.

Its possible, but dont count on it. More than likely, they WILL know what theyre looking for, and you WONT get lucky.

that is why his only chance would be getting someone that knows absolutly nothing about rx-7's.. and there is a chance of that in bakersfield

The techs in the bay area are pretty damn sharp.&nbsp Same goes for the ones in and around Sacramento (amazingly - probably due to the fact that CARB is based in Sac)...&nbsp These ones know what an FC pre-cat looks like and know if it's missing...
