Why you should buy a racing beat exhaust system!
Heres a set of mufflers that I bought. They are old racing beats for the turbo. My research indicates late 80's or very early 90's.
As I bought them.
After sanding off the dirt and paint.
I found NO evidence of rust pitting on the system. There is more paint to sand off and that shows in the images. This system is almost as old as the car it came off of. For an exhaust system to survive that long in that good of condition is amazing. Remember too this is prior to the stainless steel versions that they are producing now. Those will probably last forever.
So goodbye borla cat back and hello racing beat, they will be seeing more of me when its time to get some new parts.

One test, rap the cans and listen to the sound. If it goes thud, then you're packing is still good. If it sounds like a cow bell, then the packing has pretty much all blown out. That said, I have a pair of like vintage RB REVII type cans on my S5 Turbo Vert (I actually prefer ther stock like tips better compared to the current RevII tips) and the're still "thud" nicely. But all the other components are new REV II parts.
If the latter, you could perhaps save a few bucks and simply buy a RB like size universal muffler (about halve the cost of a complete RB can) and have your local muffler shop simply move the hangers off your old RB cans to the new ones. Maybe even go for one of their cool rotor shaped ones, although I hear (pun intended) they're a bit louder than their regular cans.

The plan is to paint them with high temp primer and then high temp satin black. I figure that should keep them from ever rusting within the foreseeable future.
Also Hozzmanrx7 They pass the rap test. so looks like these 20 year old cans aren't going down with out a fight.

I had an Ebay 3" Motoria exhaust. Way, too loud & even got a ticket for an unmuffled engine once (dropped bc the cop didn't file the ticket) Mid pipe was cracking out after two years of driving rarely.<10k mi...
Got a full, used & in good condition RB Rev TII for $300.. it's one of my favorite upgrades. Cops barely notice me now.
Hope it holds up for a long time & seeing that one, I think it will. Still shiny...

Quality exhausts require a bit more work + a bit more money. I don't quite have the money for that and I regret having my crappy weld job one that I am currently using. It's got more holes than Bonnie and Clyde (though it did cost me free.99 since I was using left-over exhaust parts)...

Just thought I'd add, original exhaust still on our '89 TII since May '89.
Not bad for 22 years.
Just for kicks, cost wise, the OE mufflers list, $277 each, converters for the TII, $1550 & $2682, int pipe $223 = $5009 just for these parts.
More than most RX7's are worth.
