why remove p/s?

i see a lot of people remove their power steering

is it just to save weight? or is there added control by not having the speed sensing p/s there?

Mainly done for weight savings and to make the engine bay cleaner and more accessable to work on. Its all about personal preferance if you like the feel or not, it will feel alot tighter at lower speeds, but shouldnt affect greater speed driving.

many people dont like the "sloppy" feel p/s can give ya. without it you feel much more in contact with the road...engine bay clean up as well and wieght like Rxmfn7. Though regardless of what some say, its not going to make your car faster, I didnt notice a damn thing. All abot preference.

I wouldn't mind putting a manual rack in mine, although the light power steering is really nice to have. Just wish I didn't have to deal with all the friggin' huge lines going everywhere and that massive bracket just hanging there

I prefer the manual feel over the one finger driving with the power steering, it just makes me feel like I'm driving a real car instead of a simulator or something.

While were on the subject, does anyone have any experience driving with a manual rack vs a plugged and capped power rack?? I hear the manual rack is slower than the power one, I wondered how different it will feel. I was just going to remove my pump and stuff and cap my rack, but I do have access to a manual one if I decide to swap them. Just wondering if there is much difference between the two....

The manual rack has a higher ratio, ie: more turns lock to lock. The manual rack will give you less steering effort than a power rack with no power assist because of a better MECHANICAL ADVANTAGE. Go with the manual rack if you can get it, it weighs less to boot!! Mine is on the way.......

Yea, the higher ratio of the manual rack is what makes me not want to get it... I think Id prefer the tighter feel of the power rack....I dunno.

The effort difference in a manual rack, and a sealed P/S rack is almost nothing.

Many of my friends are amazed that my car doesn't have P/S. It turns faster, and easier than their P/S cars at a stop. The only downside (not really a downside, but I need to get used to it) is the wheel is a LOT more responsive, you move it a ½" to either direction, and the car WILL go there.

All I did, was remove the P/S pump lines, and put a vacuum on the rack (2 bolts w/ o-rings, bolting one on, turning it one way, switch holes with the bolt in it, repeat; after a few times, I had the least amount of fluid I could, a sealed system, and with the front end jacked up, I could "throw" the steering wheel from lock-to-lock.

Oh yeah, I did the mod to clean up my engine bay, and for ease of working on my car. The weight savings were a bonus (the A/C on the other hand, was removed for weight savings alone)

interesting maybe i'll try your sealed p/s rack setup instead of reinstalling my ps. I never put mine back in after i put my new motor in for ease of working on the motor.

I did the sealed ps rack method, works great. Its easy as hell to turn. Like Ive said before I can steer fine with 1 hand below 5mph.

I think the question is more like "why do people keep their power steering in?" If you can come up with a good reason for yourself, then keep it.

P/S Removal

I removed my P/S because it was leaking fluid from the driver's side of the rack. That fix is expensive and requires a special tool kit. Just removing the pump and capping lines wasn't an option. I don't care what anyone on here says, you have to have some lubricant in the rack for it to last. Mine would have leaked out. I found a used manual rack on eBay for about $80 including shipping charges. It's in the car now and I have just found an A/C mounting bracket from a manual steering car to replace that big, ugly P/S mount. I'm giving the guy $40 plus shipping. The rack is tight and I'm happy with it and the whole assembly weighs a lot less than the power rack and pinion if you're looking for a weight advantage.

NOTE: If you buy a used rack and pinion assembly, be sure to get the passenger side mount with it. That mount is different than the one used on the power rack and pinion.
