Why does my 88 turbo II sounds like a lawnmower?

hmmm...

Aside from recording the sound of a V8 or V12 and putting some loudspeakers on your exhaust you will never get rid of the lawnmower on steroids sound...

But I like the sound of the rotary...

I don't like the heat though, it boiled my battery clean dry.

Hm. If that didn't fix it, then it may be something more serious.

Do the jumpy idle and odd sound seem to be correlated? I mean, like, REALLY "connected" somehow? The jumpy idle (could you describe it more?) could be caused by many different things. How loud is the lawnmower sound? You do know that rotaries sound like 2-strokes (well, to some people) because of their design, right?

Did you ever fix your exhaust manifold leak?

I heard many TII and almost all of them with time develop an exhaust leak whether is the engine to manifold or manifold to turbo gasket that breaks. I dout is the turbo to downpipe but i will soon find out because my bother in law has one and he ask me to fix it.

Thats an easy one to fix, My Bro-in-law has a 10th aniversary with low milage but the sound definitly comes from the bottom of the engine near the turbo. also i think that leak is robing him about .75 PSi of boost.

this sounds a lot like a blown rotor side seal. Do a compression check.

No man, it`s not a blown rotor seal; I been working with rotary engines for 10 years, rebuilding, porting; you name it and regular engines for another 8 years.
But thanks for the guess.

I am not talking about the lawnmower sound. The wired sound only happens when I full throttle. It sounds like when you take a piece of paper and put it against a spinning fan. It is pretty loud.

I am not sure if I have an exhaust leak in the exhaust manifold however I do have a hole right before the right rear muffler. The problem is the sound is not coming from where the hole is, it is coming from under the hood.

As for the idle it idles at 1000 rpm and it will jump up to 1300 rpm and come back down consistently. It is about 1 - 2 second interval.

I am looking for a passenger side mirror so I can get the car inspected therefore I can't really drive it to get the exhaust pipe hole patched yet.

I will do a compression test tomorrow.

I think you should check your exhaust ... like everyone says... Do you have the stock manifold or a downpipe?? I know with my car it sounded like a crappy lawn mower because of my cheap header that i had on there. Because the metal used in a downpipe or a header is often thinner you will get that shrill resonance from under the hood, and even out your exhaust for that matter... Header wrap can often quiet it down... also though i would check your exhaust as well... Crappy mufflers, and even a rusted out cat.. can make a bad sound. thats just a thought..

good luck

i have a mindtrain 3 inch downpipe, gutted cat, 3 inch Y pipe, and straight through sebring stainless cans(stealth looking)

from idle to 3k or so..its deep as hell....once i hit boost...it transforms into a chainsaw/lawnmower on roids.

its cool, i just think its normal
