Why does car still run?

Why does car still run?

OK I started the car up for the first time in 6 months since I finally got my conversion done.

Now thr problem is that it doersn't shut off when you take the keys out!

So what coudl it be?

I'm guessing bad ignition switch? any other thoughts?

Grab a manual and look up the connections at the key switch. Check for 12V at the IGN lead after you have removed and turned off the key...Might be a worn/sticky key switch...

lol I know I did this too well lol!

Yesterday was just plain funny.

The starter caught fire! then the car wouldn't shut down and the rpms were rising due to a tight throttle cable! I was like AHHHH!!!!!!!!

Thx Aaron. I'm thinking its a worn one like you said.

Here is an additional symptom I found.

I will turn the key into the start position and won't do anything. Then I try it again and nothing.
Then after a try or two it will kick the starter over.

Once I get this done I can move onto the damn throttle cable!

Try swapping the two small wires on the alternator IF you have had a broken connector and might have gotten them crossed.. remember I said IF.

I had this same problem this last year and for the life of me can't remember exacty what the cause was. I KNOW it was two swapped wires and the alternator was *back feeding* the ignition system and when I uncrossed the wires the problem went away.

I also remember if the key was off the engine kept running BUT if I held the brake and dumped the clutch to kill the engine....the engine died of course, but there were no ingintion lights one etc. It was the alternator that was keeping the ignition ***on***.

Hailers do you mean the double wire which connects to the back? I DID rewire that art since NA's and TII's differe in this section. So possibly crossing these wires would cause a constant power to the ingiotion system?

Yes, you have the alternator signal wires crossed. I have made the same mistake before. REverse those wires and watch the magic

Well. Part 2 of the never ending problems.

Now the starter won't kick over for some odd reason.

It did a minute ago then we tried again and it just made noises from the fuel lines and other stuff kicking on.

I did check my ingition switch and everything is fine. All showed the right continuity and none had unwanted voltage.

So I can't try the car without the alt plug until I can get it to bump over.

The bad thing is that tomorrow I will be gone for 3-4 days so I can't trouble shoot. And on the 4th day IU have to give my rental car back!

were you cranking it alot previously? tap it with a hammer lightly, the solenoid could be sticking, if no good check the voltages at the feed and the ignition hot
but you knew that already

hmm well it starts again.

I got home today and tried to turn the car over. I removed the EGI fuse to just lube it up and unflood it.

I did this about 5 times over a 15 minute period.

I then went to try and really start it up and after a try or two(wouldn't catch and get going) well all of a sudden it stops turning.

Fuel pump and everything else is getting power.
At first I though it was a bad battery connection but I cleaned the posts and it still did it.

So I am guessing it's the switching wire on the starter solenoid.

Hailers in another thread posted how to over ride that swtch and activate the starter.

SOOOOO....
I want to make sure I'm going to do it right.
I get a wire and connect one end to the switch single pin and then the other side touches the Positive(Big connection wihch bolts on from the battery?)terminal on the starter or some where else?

Yeah, just jumper the small blade on the starter to the large wire bolted next to it. The big wire has the 12v to whip the starter over. The small blade needs 12v to pull in the solenoid. Make sure the car is out of gear when you do this.

well nothing happened other than a lot of sprarks and some new heat welds on my screw driver.

I don't have another TII starter so I will either have to pull it off and try to swap the solenoid off my NA starter or go buy a new one.

SO i just spent $174 on a new one. This better ficx this ****ing problem!!!ARGH!

so far it's working. I've yet to get the car to turn over though. I might have to tinker with the throttle cable so it will kick over.

Yeah. If it just spark and arcs and does not turn over, it's most likely a jammed starter or solenoid (I do see where you changed it out and it now rotates but does not start).

well I have tried to turn it over over 25 times today.

I checked for spark and fuel and it's there.
The starter is turning fine.

I've removed the EGI fuse every time and it still doesn't start up.

I even tried twice to push start it but to no avail.

I've even put some 2stroke oil in the spark plug holes to try and build compression.

Can anyone give some hints or tricks to get it running?
Can anyone give some tips?

well I've removed the spark plugs and they were pretty damn wet.
So I'm going to leave it open air over night to try and dry out the chambers.

I'll then try to put some 2stroke in the chamber tomorrow morning. Hopefully it will start up. I'm on borrowed time right now for my daily driver and am running out soon.

second thought. Is the 2stroke oil my problem?shoudl I actually get ATF? or will this do fine?

I mean 2stroke is meant to be burned up and lube so it should be fine right?

If everything is working correctly- starter, motor, and spark/fuel working then make sure u have absolutely clean spark plugs as well as the motor unflooded.

Make sure you crank motor couple times with spark plugs off, egi fuse pulled off, and maybe throw in a pinch of two stroke oil to build compression. After that put fresh "dry" spark plugs, put egi fuse in and it shoud crank over.

Also since you where messing with alternator wiring make sure you check that your 15A engine fuse didn't blow from inside the car!! This has happened to me and you would think car is flooded but really it won't fire up simply b/c engine fuse popped. This could happen simply by touching a wire to ANY ground and POP there goes your fuse.

Also your car has to be backfeeding power through the alternator and since you did N/A-TII conversion you need to make sure that the two wires are running separately to "empty slots" in the large yellow plugs near the ecu. Separately, meaning that the engine harness wires that used to go there (large yellow plug) are now cut off and sealed so you won't get any backfeeding. Hope this helps.

I have temporarily just unplugged the back plug for the alt.

I did cut those wires and wrap them so they don't make a contact. I will just resolder/cut the plug at the alt area since it's easier to get at.

I will check my interior fuse box though just in case.

I've turned the car over a few times with the EGI comp fuse out and am letting it dry over night. The plugs look fine just a bit wet. They are sitting on my table drying as well.
