Who Say's N/As can't run 13s????

Okay so maybe this is cheating but the car is an 85 gsl, with a S4 STOCK port engine, with bolts on -- exhuast intake, e-fan, ignition, and 4.88 rear end and running nitto drag radials..the car weights 2300lbs......heres the time slip, of coarse he is #43

PP 13b + carb (FI if you could make it work!)+ gutted FC chassis should have no trouble running 13s.

I don't think you need peripheral ports, a bridge port ought to get you in the 13's if you did some weight reduction.
I believe that Judge Ito bridgeported a 6-port N/A and is looking to get 250 whp with bolt ons, and an S-AFC/Haltech.

That is an incredible NA time considering the .967 reaction time.

So now I am thinking that all I need to do is get my NA base FC down to about 2400 lbs, get some slicks, do a good port job on it and maybe I can make low 14s . . . But the 4.88 gears makes me wonder how bad the stock 4.1 set would work.

R/T has nothing to do with the ET. Yea those 4.88 gears probably helped out alot, although it is a stock port S4. So Im thinking with my streetport with S5 rotors and the 4.30 gears , along with other planned mods I should be able to see 13s

Thanks! I've been tuning and tweaking, just to see what a non-ported setup could do. In the end, it's all about physics - the power to weight ratio.

The 4.88's don't give as much as you would think. Maybe 2/10th or so. My best 60' was done with 4.08 gears (ran a 14.38 with 150lb extra and granny shifting).

You are both correct.

In South Texas "correct amongo" translates into "48 DHLA Dellorto from Racing Beat".

It could be done with stock efi, but you would have to remove a LOT more weight.

Awesome job man. Where did you get the 4.88 gears from? What tranny did you use, and how much did you have to do to get it to work with it? I wouldn't mind having a 4.88 in my car.

I purchased the gears from Mazda Competition (now Mazdaspeed). I also installed the oversize discs so that it is really tight. Racing Beat also sells the same gears.

The trans is a stock 85 GSL w/ synthetic oil in it.

The 4.88's, bearings, clutches to set up the 3rd member are not cheap. About 25% of the total value of the car! In retrospect, for 1/4 mile use, the money would have been better spent elsewhere, like more weight reduction. The 4.88's are great for autocross and the 5.13's might be even better.

Remember that tire diameter makes a big difference on effective gear ratio. I have different tires that will give me a 4.38 (225/70-14) to a 5.05 (205/55-14). Instead of spending big bucks on a gear set, you can just get a set of short tires on a spare set of wheels. Here's a calculator to help figure things out:
http://gs.tolan-hoechst.com/tirecalc.htm

Use an ET calculator that will tell you your 1/4 mile ET based on horsepower and vehicle weight. It will show you the cheapest way to speed.

I have some questions for you:
-what is the weight of your car?
-what is your 60' et?
-1/8 mile et and mph?

60'---2.22
1/8--9.67
1/8 mph-73

Im not sure what my weight is but this might help:

87 base, power nothing
no ps/airpump/acv/subzero/hatch mat/spare/jack

phone dial wheels, standard tranny
