so inluew to another thread i went and found this obnoxiously small piece of a sealing rubber on the back side of the hood/window area. it goes from one side of the car to the other. after mor than 6 or 7 swaps and rebuilds and removing the hood over and over i never noticed it.. im pulling it off as im expecting cooling to improve without it... i dont understand why the hell its there...

you know what a cowl induction hood is? There is a high pressure area infront of the window which forces air into the engine bay not sucking air out to aid in cooling. It does work if you plumb your intake into that area though, Cowl Induction.

 

my car cools better with the windows down than with windows up i swear , no heat or anything on
.. that rubbers coming off... i have been dealing with this oddity for a while constantly being wierded out..also why does raising the rear of the hood improve cooling then???

 

that strip helps keep water from entering the firewall side of the engine bay while raining or washing the 7.

also, maybe some ducting would help with your cooling issues.

 

all cars have it and th eFD guys concluded it's not good for cooling. It's the same principal as cowl induction. there's a pressure point at the base of the windshield and air would be flowing backwards under your hood and it wouldn't let anymore hot air out that it would with the rubber there.

 

If it does allow more air through, it won't be letting air out. It'll allow air to be pushed into the engine bay from the high-pressure area at the base of the windscreen, which will make it harder for air to be pushed through the radiator. Simple physics.

Weatherproofing.

 

The other reason it is there is to prevent the climate control system from sucking in hot and dirty engine air.

Now do you see why our hood is fully functional and would be a good improvement for both N/A and turbo cars? I know you're turbo already so it's really going to help you out. Your thread title is funny as hell by the way!

Being civil.. in traffic situations it would allow heat to escape but as everyone else has said it serves a couple purposes and should remain in place.

 

could you put a CAI there?, or route cold air from there to a cold air box, because ive been trying to figure out a good CAI setup, and i can figure out how to get the cold air

 

dont try to design an elaborate intake system, the ones out there work very well and you dont need to blow things up lol

 

its jsut funny i havent noticed it .. you dont spend much time under the hood with the hood down... doh.. im considering the options.. and obvious one is the vented hood.. and also a better fan.. evidently it doesnt take a huge hole to drop over all engine temps cuz with the heat off and windows down while crusing the temp will sit at the the very beginning of the paint line. the only holes is the ECU hole and then i know some slowly bleeds through the AC system even when its off. its just funny cuz it like there is no firewall with the window down.. the temp changes very fast from window up to window down. in a minute or under it will move to just a lil above an 8th of the gauge cluster... and yes an aftermarket water temp gauge is in the plans. i have posted about this beofre but got no responses. but now i see the reason .. the hood doesnt get any cooling from the back like i thought...never thought that that small of an opening would be that prone to backflow but fluid dynamics is still fluid dynamics
