Paying hundreds of dollars for a CAI seems a bit silly to me - especially as you can make one yourself for almost nothing. All you need is time and patience, and you can fab up something very useful that looks like it is direct from an aftermarket company.

 

to me that would be more difficult than getting a 30 dollar prelude cai setup off ebay and use some hand tools to cut a hole bigger. That looks good though

nice setup man! I had something like that on my first gen.

 

Here's what gets me about the fabbing thing, those two hose dealies on the hose that lead into it, what about them? Would I just use a hole saw and cut into the pipe and silicone them into place? I also like the setup on that blue FC with the headlight cover induction and cold air box. I really like that setup. Who sells those headlight covers for less than Rotary Performance (I don't wanna pay $144 for the fiberglass ones)?

does replacing the TB inlet duct really makes a difference?
i would think that it's large enough already

 

You can bore it out like I did and shave off the abrupt corner it has inside to smooth out the transition into the TB

 

anyone else know of any cai from other cars besides a lude that can swap in? i think i heard somewhere u could use a civic one but im not sure. im goin to check out some intakes on ebay and look at the basic shapes :/

i bought my '90 'Vert with an Apex'i CAI already on it, and it isn't ghetto or anything. i'll post pictures if you want them, but it looks like it was made for the FC. i'm not really sure, though.

make me an offer on it, though, because i might be selling some N/A stuff due to the fact that i am hoping to boost VERY soon (like this weekend or next weekend or VERY VERY soon)

i've got an Apex'i CAI, Racing Beat headers, a G'Reddy pre-silencer, and then it's a 2.5" pipe back to a 6" diameter PowerTech (ebay :-() muffler with a 4" tip.

so if any of you guys are interested, i don't think i can reuse any of them on the TII engine. so make me an offer.

I mean that buying a 200 dollar CAI is a rip off, fabing one is better. Cool Blue used to sell these kits where you would take their ducting, place it where it gets fresh air. The ducting then goes to the air filter, and then into your TB. They were custom kits that you ordered from Jegs, you told them the size of the filter you wanted, the lenght of Ducting ect...The ducting was just some blue slinky-looking hose, could have been fabbed for much cheaper......My Spearco 3 inch cools the temps pretty well.....

I got some aluminum sheeting. After fiddling around with cardboard awhile, I realized the best way for me was to block off behind the [cone] filter, and the radiator side. To seal it to the fender side, I scribed the shape onto the cardboard, then cut and transferred the shape to the Al sheet. I actually made the heat shield all from one piece, with a 90* bend for the radiator side. I also did my best to scribe the shape of the hood. Got some pipe insulation (already split with adhesive, good stuff) to seal the top of the shield/box. Removed the washer bottle, enlarged the hole (this was difficult with a 2.5" hole saw). Got some aluminum accordian-type ducting (not the dryer vent stuff, it's stronger than that) and ran it to the brake duct inlet (my brake ducts were already removed). Pulled the tube through the hole, and aimed it at the filter. I'm awaiting a replacement alternator before I can test it out. I didn't cut a hole for the AFM to fit through the shield, I actually made bolts holes so the shield bolts up between the AFM and filter.

This was all free, since a friend had bought the sheet to make a shield for his FC, and he bought the tubing to duct air to his filters. I made all mine with leftovers. I might have pics later after it runs.

 

Why not just buy a K&N filter and drop it into the stock airbox. I've always done this with all the cars I've modded and it works perfectly fine. The stock airbox is usually pretty good at keeping engine heat at bay. If anything, you can run pvc piping from the front to the airbox if you want more volume. This would ensure cool air running through the filter.

definitely do home depot. i spent 20 bucks total and it works like a charm. some aluminum elbows and silicon couplers (is that what theyre called?) = my filter now sits under my car and a slave to the elements, but i have yet to experience any ill effects and i actually drove through hurricane charley down here in swfl so its tried and true.
