who knows there shiznat????

Alright, me = 17 year old biznatch. cars f**kin rock except all i really know about cars is which imports are which, i know the outside of my imports, but engines are out of my league, I'd like to change that though, I plan on buying a 2nd gen RX-7 GTU, GSL SE, or TII. I'm in Canada now though and pretty much all thats for sale are GXL's and GSL SE's, so i might go down to the states and pick up a TII there. Things i wanna know:

1- It seems as though rotary's are a bitch and always break down, t/F? (explain)

2- would this be a good idea for first car given my little amount of knowledge about it?

3- how much would going down to the states and picking one up cost (car?/traveling?/boarder ****?)

4- I'm not looking to spend more than $4000 US, (preferably less), still a good idea??

5- how easy is it to learn about rotary's??

6- I need to learn about the engine on a rotary so i can do it up and make it fast, i also need a place to find good parts for cheap, any suggestions on where i can learn about it? how about where i can find good cheap parts??

any help is appreciated. thanks.

1. False, the rotary engine need TLC. If you can't change the oil every 2500-300 miles or make sure everything is working well, dont ruin a perfectly good car! The most common "failure" is ppl w/TII's that upgrad the intake, exhaust, and start hauling ***.... You need to upgrade the fuel b/c you run lean under these conditions..and any engine rotary, or otherwise will detonate when running lean... Take care of it and a NA will give 200k+ miles... turbo may run 120+.. MAKE SURE to get compression tested and know previous owner history/abuse/...

2.My NA is my first car

3. uh..

4. Yes

5. Extremely, I swapped/rebuilt an engine w/only a Haynes manaul!!

6. DONT RICE IT OUT!!!

http://www.racingbeat.com/ has great PERFORMANCE upgrades for RX-7's.
2ndgenrx7.freeservers.com has good info
SEARCH the forum to find whatever your looking for.

Hey Man $4000US is alot in Canadian green. Enough anyways that you could find a decent T2, you just have to keep your eyes peeled for a good one, and be patient.

First things first, read as much as you can about the RX-7, this forum is good but find other sources online and books, and even some magazines do decent indepth articles on the 7. Rotary engines last just fine if you treat them right. Your biggest concern with modifiying them is fuel, get all the proper instumentation BEFORE doing any mods ie) Air/fuel, Boost, Exhuast Gas temp gauges. Buy an FCD you will need one eventually anyways. I have found my car can be finiky and small things can throw it off it's game, but a little research seems to help fix the problems. One of the key's for me was to find a group of other RX-7 owners and meet and talk with them as much as possible, they can help you out with diagnosing problems and teaching you alot about your car at the same time. Also get to know your local RX-7 shop, taking it to the dealer has for most owners caused nightmares. I have also learned that alot can be done if you have the right tools. A specialty shop may charge you an arm and a leg to do a job you could have done with some basic knowledge and the right tool.

Hope that helped

Rotary engines are SOO much simpler than piston engines to work on. They are pretty cheap to get parts for too, compared to other imports if you just know where to go to get them. Some site with aftermarket parts:

www.mazdatrix.com
www.rx7.com
www.racingbeat.com
www.rx7fashion.com

Advice: Go out and get a haynes manual as soon as you pick an RX-7 up and browse through it. Spend a lot of time on this board reading through the tech sections and 2nd Gen sections. Ask lots of questions. You'll be a pro in no-time.

Speedracer is right. The rotary is way easier to work on than pisston motors. Especially since we all pretty much know what the usual problems are on the FC's and how to fix them easily.

BTW, the GSL SE was a FB/1st gen, not an FC (at least in the states it is)

For just getting into the cars, get an N/A. Easier to work on and more reliable. Then later on you can either upgrade to another FC TII, convert your N/A to TII or sell off the N/A and buy a TII. Either way, you will have far more knowledge to work on and repair the TII if you have gone through an N/A first.

what up? another winnipeg 7 driver! but im only 16. I got 86 local but its an N/A. Check www.canadatrader.com for 7s in each province, i couldnt find a TII here either so yer best bet is another province. you shouldnt have to go into the states to pick one up. All the ones in the states were asking way too much anyways, well good luck

one more question though....
what should i upgrade if i plan on putting a K$N filter (or something similar) and doing up the exhaust, what should i do to counter the bad effects those might have? (ie: fuel upgrades)??

well i am currently doing the K&N kit, the only one thing that i'm going to have to do is either install it in a different place that the old filter system was, or build a cold air induction box for it, otherwise it will be sucking in hot engine air...and that ruins the whole cold air induction idea

This is for ppl in canada lookin for a rx7.. heres what i have and what i paid for my 1990 turbo rx7. .. i got the following with it...i picked it up from ontario.

1. engine with 50,000 km including recepit from mazda
2. apex lowering springs
3.intake
4. rb full turbo back exhaust
5.fcd
6. only had 84,000 km.
7. mint condition inside and out..
8. 3 pc racing wheels.
9.high rise spoiler like a stock supra spoiler
10 boost gauge
11. turbo timer

$9400 cdn....and $650 to ship it down from ontario to winnipeg.
got my car appraised and they appraised it at $12,500 by jim gauthier mazda.

hope these figures help.

dont just depend on the canadatrader or whatever. try getting a japenese autotrader from ontario. it has way more than what u see on the internet. i'll try getting the number to order ontario japenese autotrader. they have diffrent autotraders for japenese cars, european cars and domestic cars, just cuz of the fact they have so many cars down in ontario..ive seen so many rx7s with mods down in ontario going at a reasonable price..
