White Smoke
Ok well pervioulsy i blew my n/a motor and swapped it with one that has 40k on it... and i compression check it and it has good compression... and the car runs normal everything and i decided to change the oil and filter so i have clean oil... so now when i turn the car on i get white smoke from my exhaust... and it stops smoking once the car starts to warm up is that normal? cause it never happend to me before... btw i used Castrol Gtx 10w-30 (nonsynthetic)

could be a rich mixture when you first start the car then when the car starts to read the O2 sensor the computer leans the car out that would be my best bet. the computer just needs to adjust to your new engine because it is use to running with your old one

My car does this too while warming up. Goes away pretty quick though. And the fact that its been really cool around here doesnt help.
yea well right now its cold and it only smokes alittle bit when i first turn the car on when its still cold... but as i said when i had the old oil in it it didnt smoke then it started when i changed the oil... ohh teh hose from the air pump to the Cat isnt connected would that maybe be the reason?
that only dissapates the hc and co its an emmissions thing don't imagine unless u had a really strong smell of gas commin out. if it has a really stong smell then its rich other wise i'd say its normal and don't worry about it unless the smoke gets worse
Doesn't have to smell like coolant. Could smell like......well nothing like you would normally smell. Could also be leaking oil into the chamber and burning oil and coolant at startup. These are the symptoms of an old motor with weak seals.
Listen, The coolant seeps past a weak seal and builds up as the motor is not running......the coolant is still under pressure as the motor cools down. This build up burns out at start up and the smoke stops. However your still running coolant through the motor its just being burned in small qtys.
Don't listen to me. Find out for yourself. I was in denial as well. Here is what I sounded like last August.........Surely I didn't just buy a Vert with a blown motor. I'm way too smart for that. When the engine was broken down there was a 3/4" chip missing from the front Iron. The coolant seals were still there but you could see where the corosion from months of water seeping into that coolant channel.
I hate it that you but a block and its not good. I hate to see something like that happen to anybody. But the symptoms are always the same......smokes like heel at start up=blown coolant seals.

As for the smoke, I wouldn't worry about it unless the car is making a James Bond smoke screen and you can't see passed the rear hatch glass when you look in the rear view mirror.

ok, if I resume the majority of smoke problem it goes like this :
big amounts of smoke on startup, stops when hot = possibly coolant seal
little smoke on startup + much smoke when shifting at WOT = oil control rings
I think someone could make a write-up on this subject on how to possibly diagnose engine troubles or failure by the smoke's symptoms...
this would prevent having 4-5 new threads per day on this subject. What do you think about that?

but your right this is a regular problem with series 4 FC's and there should be a write up on this.
well, what kind -of oil did you use? and sometimes more than others your exhaust will build up more condensation than you expect and will push a little white looking smoke, coolent smoke tends to trail off more where as condensation smoke wont really trail off much, just kinda evaporates, ANY car will do this, and the colder it is when you start up the more smoke you will see.

I have the same problem with the 87 I just bought. It smoke a small bit on start but when you run it at high rpms, it gets pretty bad. But after warming up it smokes slightly at high rpm's. Guessing from a previous post that might be a coolant seal? That sound about right? Never really noticed any kind of smell
I too have a smoke problem... big coolant leak that falls onto my exhaust; i can see drips from under the middle of the car. Smoke gets into my cabin, seaps out from all edges of my car when its stopped or after i shut it off for 15-20 minutes. Hope its just a hose.. going to take it to some general mechanic guy to have a look see.
I concur, mine only smoked white smoke (my first generation) on start up, I could rev it all the way up to 8k rpms and have no signs of it...it gradually got worse and worse and worse.
