Your aftermarket intake is causing the increased noise.

If you suspect a vac leak, a vac hose makes a good precision listening device.
Hold one to your ear and position the other end near possible leak noise sources.

BTW Russ - 4K$ is not a money pit - It's a bargain.
Did I say that once before?

Well the intake on mine certainly makes the engine louder, and you notice it when you're going wide open and the 5th/6th ports open up...but I don't hear any whistling, just the wonderful rotary roar.

Good luck... you can always turn the radio up

It's your turbochar.... oh wait. haha

On a serious note, I had an exhaust leak that made a harsh whistle when at high revs.

Its probably just the ports or the intake, probably nothing to worry about mine whistled at high RPMs (and believe me that thing was always at a high RPM ) after I got a custom cold air intake and it just quit after awhile guess it just needed broken in.

check that the plastic muffler used for the ACV dump is still attached. SOmeimtes the rubber hose will fall off.

It is near your passenger side headlight. Look up the FSM if you still can't find it.

the ACV dumps air to ATM at a certain RPM. I can't remember what RPM exactly, but in doing so the stock system runs from a 5/8inch rubber hose to the plastic muffler underneth the passenger head light lamp. It is there so that you don't hear a hiss/whistling sound when it does this. If the rubber hose if off or ruptured then you will hear it dump to ATM.

I hear the depression part, I bought my T2 about a year and change ago at 16 and now it needs a new motor and tranny, I bought those but I work so much I can only work on it for about an hour a day, so it's gonna take a while to get it in. I work at a shop and ride a bike to work, everyone laughs at me :P Oh well, BMX for life.

I agree that it could be an exhaust leak. My friends' Dodge Stealth whistles like a turbo at high revs. He knows its an exhaust problem that happened from a twice botched repair job. He likes the whistle sound though so he hasn't taken it back to the muffler shop.
