Whirring sound from transmission . . . eep!!!!
Let me describe.
Sounds like a bad bearing.
I just need opinion on if it sounds like the throwout bearing or inside the tranny.
It happens when the input shaft is spinning (clutch engaged in any gear, neutral)
also happens when the car is rolling backwards under its own weight. Tranny shifts fine (better than many other ive driven). So yeah could it be inside the transmission? or could i be lucky and its only the TO bearing?

How loud is it? I had a whirring sound coming from my tranny but simply changing the fluid solved it for me. It wasn't loud at all though just noticable. I guess I could hear it over my straight flows though so it might have been louder than I thought.
Can't have any problems with the targa though get that baby fixed

As far as I know, the throw-out bearing only makes the "whirr" sound when the clutch is NOT engaged.
I think..Icemark? Or RETed? Has a write-up somewhere of what all the different symptoms mean.

A sure sign of a throwout bearing is the sound of loose bearings right when you let the clutch out. My 86 GXL makes an awful racket in all gears, 1st and 2nd are quite loud, but it shifts great. I am driving the hell out of it ( I have a spare tranny in garage ready to go in). WHen it goes out, I will let you know what was the problem.

Usually, when you press the clutch pedal in, and it makes noise it's most likely the throw-out release bearing.
If it's whirring with the trans in neutral with you off the clutch pedal, it's most likely the pilot bearing.
You might as well change all of it when you pull the trans apart, since the parts are relatively cheap.
~$40 for the throw-out release bearing
~$20 for the pilot bearing and seal
