Whining noise from tranny/clutch

I get a whining noise that increases in pitch with engine speed...

It happens only in Neutral and in 1st. It goes away in 2ng gear.

And only when the clutch is out.

How much does a new tranny cost? heh... I wonder if it's even worth rebuilding one.

Tranny input shaft bearing...very common with rx7 manual trannies.

Woo thanks for the fast reply Kevin! (In the PM too!)

My car seems to be the definitive "common problems" car haha. Suspected bad front Ujoint on the driveshaft too... the tranny vibrates... someone told me this was a common thing as well.

Wasn't someone making and selling a driveshaft with rebuildable joints? Is it much more expensive than a new stock one? Sounds like a good investment for what will hopefully be a DD/AutoX car.

Mine has been doing the same thing since I got the car. I got another trans and have been waiting for it to get worse or act like it's about to fail. I've now been beating the **** out of this trans for 15,000 miles and it hasn't changed. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with my switching over to Redline synthetic? It might be a good band-aid to let you run on the poor thing for a bit...

Bullshit. A TOB is only in use when the clutch pedal is PUSHED IN. The noise here is made when the pedal is NOT PUSHED, at which time the TOB is sitting idly by, about 1/4" away from the pressureplate, doing nothing.

It might be a damaged clutch release bearing...

But that's just a guess.

Given the posts that show up on a daily basis on this forum, this would seem to be the case.
