whining coming from tranny?

i have a whining noise coming from the tranny that goes away when i push the clutch pedal in, i havnt had time to pull down the tranny yet i just want to get some ideas as to what is causing the noise and if is ok to drive for awhile before i throw in a new clutch, i had a buddy suggest that it is the throwout berring. There is a short throw shifter on the car too if that matters

Sounds like a throwout bearing for sure, shouldnt hurt anything by not replacing it just will annoy you. A 'Clutch Kit' should include a new one.

I dont see how being hard on the engine will hurt anything behind it from the wore out throwout bearing. All thats making noise is that its wore out, its basically a sealed bearing that as wore out and is grinding/whing.

No, sorry if it came off that way. You should be alright. It stops whing with the clutch in because it has pressure on the bearing, when its unsprung it wobbles a bit, hence you get your whining sound.

Its just a n/a? I would just run stock then, great life and will hold up for a long long time if broken in and used properly.

Yup good luck with the car, if your new to RX7s just be patient and research. They are harder then most cars to understand but they pay off in the end.

From what I've always heard, a throw-out bearing will have the opposite symptoms; it will make noise with the clutch pushed in. A noise that goes away when the clutch is pushed in would be something else, I believe one of the bearings within the transmission itself.

You'd need an S5 TII flywheel, TII clutch, TII slave cylinder, TII/auto starter and a custom driveshaft to mate with the NA rear end (www.mazdatrix.com), but it will cost a lot less than a rebuild. Besides costing you less, you'll have a much stronger transmission too.

^ I totally agree with the above post. The throwout bearing only has a load on it when the clutch pedal is depressed, so it won't cause noise when the pedal is released. The noise described is unfortunately bound to be the trans main bearing. The car can be driven just fine, but the problem will only get worse. I had my NA trans rebuilt to fix the exact same problem a few years back.

pilot bearing makes noise when the clutch is not depressed. not a tranny ending situation, but as stated above it can be a little annoying.. just pump up the volume!
