while ago asked for advice re rebuilding motor, followup question

Ok, did the diagnostics myself, my car has one fine rotor and one that is totally shot to hell. Front rotor seems to have lots of compression, three nice bouces on gage, the rear rotor had one miniscule bounce which is blown seals acording to hayse. So, I'm game to rebuild the engine. it seems silly to me to rebuild one rotor, why not go all the way. Now my problem is this. I can't get the seal kit from any local parts supplier. I get a sweet discount at UPA NAPA but they don't carry any RX-7 engine parts. I sucked it up and went and asked my local mazda dealer but they can't get them either, their solution was agian 'let us sell you a crate engine from Japan'. I'm confident I can handle the rebuild, I'll have one of the best equiped shops around to work in, and bonus, a guy in the 2nd year of the course I'm taking that knows a fair bit about rotory style engines. So what aftermarket company would be good to get the seals from, and if I go to 3mm apex seals as someone recomended, where should I get the rotors machiened for that? Any recomendations? It seems I can't do squat with the car in canada, so I assume I'll have to get the seals via the mail from the USA, but I don't know who would be good to get them from. I've seen some kits on Ebay...Are those any good? Any further advice would be greatly apreciated. Thanks. Tempest.

See the link at the top of the page that says "Mazdaformance"? That's all you need to know .

The rebuild parts only come from Mazda. Call up Mazdaformance - they've got killer pricing that will whup the dealer hands-down, and the parts guys are REALLY sharp and will help you get what you need.

Ballpark is around $500-600 in parts from Mazda to rebuild a motor. I would also highly recommend getting the Bruce Turrentine rebuild video and watch it - that steps you through the whole process. It's really not that hard, but there are a few little gotchas in the process.

Good luck,
Dale

Thanks Dale, that's just what I needed to know. I looked at atkins but they never got back to me about shipping across the border and I figured you guys would know better then I would, or then Ebay would.

I'm pretty sure Mazdaformance can deal with shipping to Canada. Give 'em a call and go from there.

The ebay auctions are from Atkins Rotary too. I bought parts from Mazdatrix.com, mazdaformance.com, and rotaryaviation.com to come up with the best prices. I just had a post on this not very long ago if you want to try a search for my username.

the cost of the atkins kit seems reasonable, 835 for the very compleat one with new bearings. I don't know if I need to go that far, after all it just has a weak rotor, I'm doing the compleat rebuild to try to stave off any further issues down the road. But the mazdaformance site didn't have a rebuild kit that I could find. I emailed them and have not heard back yet. I'm going to check out the mazdamatrix site that was mentioned next. Want to get started on this so that I can be driving the car next summer not sitting in it goin' I wish the red car ran. But my instructor is figuring it's going to take me 50 hours to do the rebuild from pulling the engine to installing it again. I think he's wrong, but I don't really know...Thanks for all the great info.

I found that kits are not generally cheaper than piecing it all together. If you know the exact parts just email mazdaformance and ask for quotes.

any recomendations of what parts should absolutly be replaced so as to not have to do this again in the near future. I know the side seals are likely the culprit due to the compression test, but if I'm doing a rebuild I should replace...(this is what I know of..someone please correct me if I say something I don't have to do, or miss something critical. )

1)apex seals and springs
2)side seals and springs
3)corner seals and springs
4)Gasket set
5)oil control rings and rubbers
6)Front and rear main seals
7)pilot bearing and seal
8)Thermal pellet

And you say this is likely going to be cheaper if I piece it together from the places that will give me the best price? And the fact that it was made by different people doesn't matter? Something to think about for sure. I'll have to look into the prices of this stuff, however Mazdaformance has the most professional website of everyone, which speaks well for them.

Rebuld kits

Atkins kits

89-91 13B 394.00 ARE39 914.00 ARE40 1014.00 ARE41

What am I missing when price is $500 and $700 from others.

89-91
13B list 1950.00 spc price 1850.00 gastet 75.00
core 550.00

Net $1350 for rebuild plus shipping?

How many hours to rebuild from drive in to drive out?

($75 per hour shop price - I am worth more)

I would think it takes more than 6 hours.

Here is my question:

89 needs rebuild.
91 has "rebuilt" engine with 20k miles by local with HORID reputation (I now find out). Engine may be just a running swap not certain about rebuild...how do I check engine number with VIN?

Should I rebuild 89 and swap into 91?
