where's this oil leak coming from?

hi, does anyone have any guesses as to where this oil leak is coming from? it's coming from somewhere near the center of the engine above the spark plugs... i hope it's not too serious.

thx.

Can't be, the oil injectors are on the left side of engine. The way that they are positioned, the oil would run down the left side of the block on the front, not on the right side on the right..

Thats weird, what the hell could it be? I'll check my haynes for you, see if I can find out anything..

that looks like a good amount of oil, I was thinking it could be puddled up from left to right. I can't think of anything else on the very top of the engine that has a distinct oil delivery system. I'd suggest taking your uim off anyway, it might help you see the problem's source more easily. Send us the picture too and we'll help.

update - is it really oil??

ya know, i'm not so sure that it's oil now... i was just feeling that dark spot, and it's really sticky??!? like sap - it doesn't feel greasy at all. it's sticky to the touch, but doesn't stick on my finger...

just out of view of in the picture there is this little cylindrical shaped thing, aligned perpendicular to the firewall that has a very narrow tube running out of it on the end facing the nose of the car. the 'front' of this cylinder where the tube is coming out is also 'sticky'.

does that give any other clues?

looking at my haynes and factory manuals... it kind of looks like this 'cylinder' might be the knock sensor? would that make any sense?

Hey, I can't tell very well from the picture, but is that area right beneath the oil filter pedestal? Maybe leaking around the seal for that?

it's relatively far from the oil filter... that's actually pretty clean at the moment

Gasoline isnt sticky and isnt that thick or dark colored. Try tracing the rubber line from the neck of the oil fill tube. There is also one that goes from the block to the mushroom shaped thing (crankcase ventilation?)

the oil is probably just kinda gooey from being heated on top of the engine.
