Does the smoke smell like coolant or oil?

Rev the car up to around 6000 rpm for about 20 seconds and then let off. Is there a crapload of smoke coming out?

I was smoking quite a bit and put in some Castrol 20w50 and that cleared it up mostly. However, I'd find out the real problem as to why it's smoking. Don't assume you'll need a rebuild, a smoking engine can last for another 100k (overstatment to get the point across).

I'd rather have my car smoke a little than put that crap in the engine. As far as I can tell it's just a thickening agent.

Not necessarily. I've used it for 2 years and my engine has shown nothing but improvement. Also helps oil pressure a bit. Car won't smoke and will run better trust me.

Because it thickens the oil...
