Where is the stock amp on an 89 FC?

As the topic says.....I can't seem to find it, i've searched the forums, and the places other people have said aren't there. I've heard behind the right front speaker, the only thing I see there is a cylindrical shaped thing, which i took apart only to find something that looked like an air filter but obviously wasn't, any idea what that is?

Anybody have a picture of what the amp looks like? It's hard looking for something that u don't know what it looks like. Thanks a lot

it is part of the speaker. It is like integrated into it or something.

I think, but am not sure, that the amp for the front speakers is located up behind the glovebox. Like the above people said though, the rear speakers have their own amps attached to each speaker. Then again, maybe the stock stereo was the amp for the front speakers.....

ok, i'm know for sure there's nothing underneath my tower speakers in the back, i don't think they're amped....but the front speakers, I have 2 in the dash that handle the highs and 2 in the doors that handle the lows, they must be thru an amp or at least a crossover right? or is the stock deck setup like that?

i spend the day trying to find the amp, but now that i think about it, maybe it's not even there....sorry, i know this should be in the audio/interior/exterior forum, but everyone that goes on there has an FD, they don't know much about FC stuff...thanks in advance

I believe it all depends on which radio came in the car from the factory. on both of my S5's there where no remote amps. I think by 89+ the amps where (internal) in the radio. But my 88 had the small amp that is part of the front right speaker assembly you would have to open the amp box to even see the speaker.

It wasn't internal on all '89's....I've got a vert and it's right behind my driver's seat, in under the removable panel. This is just the vert, so maybe yours is under the back seats or maybe back in those little cargo hatch thingies?

hmmm, ok, i'm pretty sure mine doens't have it then, unless it's buried behind the centre console. At first i thought it was under then kickpanel, is there anything in there?

And I guess I'll have to run new wires directly to the door if I want only my door speakers, correct?

Remove the plastic panels that cover the speakers on the dash, one is under the glove box the other is by your left knee when you sit in the drivers seat. On the passasnger side the amp is build into that panel, there are 8 screws to take it off to get at the speaker.

In my 88's we got lazy and just put resistors inline to them. I think? I can't remeber.

LOL, My parent have owned a Car audio store for over 18 years and my father works for Kenwood and I can barely do a deck and amp install!

Shows that some things are inherited.

Ive never done one before and found it stupidly easy, except when I crossed one wire and made my headlight switch smoke... that was interesting..

Have you looked in the FSM yet? The locations of all of the stereo components are clearly shown in there, as well as nearly everything else in the car.

You should do this anyway. I presume you're trying to bypass the stock amps to run a new head unit? It's easier just to run new wires from the head unit to the speakers instead of messing around trying to adapt the stock stuff.

I was looking through the Haynes manual, and it doesn't tell me anything, the center panel installation was even wrong, i had to figure it out myself. I'll take a look at the FSM, think i d/l it off FC3S.org a while ago.

Yeah, the hard part i find it getting the wire around all the parts in you car, especially into that little tube that goes into your door, preferably i want to get it in there w/ the rest of the wires, it'll look better and protect it. Any idea on how to get it in there?

I'd try to use the stock wires. If you find the amp then just bypass it and connect the new headunit to the wires.
Or
Find a point where you can connect to the wires which go to the speakers. Less rewiring that way.

I placed my amp behind my seat mounted to the side of the Bins and ran my power cable under my doorsil and through the pre-existing grommet in the firewall.

For a power on/lead(forgot terminology for the ignition wire for amp). I just tapped into the headunits source and ran a wire under the center console. Not a bad setup and it's pretty clean for a half hour install.

I don't have door speakers in my car so I don't know exactly what to do.

problem with that is, there are 6 channels on the deck i just realized and there is no deck, to get new front speakers working correctly, i'll have to rewire the front speakers at least because they each have 2 wires, 1 playin the high's and the other playing low's....I've figured it out, it shouldn't be too hard

Just run new wires. Adapting the old ones are a nightmare. Dont worry yourself with that, if instead you can run nice shinny thick wire directly to the speakers.
