Where does the main power cable of the battery go?

Just wondering where the battery cable goes. My car was undercoated from the factory and sometimes it's hard to trace stuff around the engine bay. Thanks.

the main + power cable goes to the starter terminal. Same for all cars of all makes. Ground goes (on our cars) to the tranny/starter frame, and also to the chassis.

FOr those with charging problems, even using the stock alternator is ok if you rewire this whole system. All it takes is an hour or so and some thick wire with connectors, even if it is walmart battery cables. Here is an explanation of the main charging system. I saw a 2.5vdc increase across the board on the last car I did this to:

--main + post of battery to main terminal of starter--use 4 gauge wire with new battery terminal and starter terminal

--main ground of battery to engine/transmission grounding point AND to chassis free of dirt and paint--use 4 gauge wire with a new battery terminal and both engine and chassis ground terminals.

--alternator + post to battery + post (or depending on what kind of battery terminals you use, you might need to run this to the starter + terminal instead). Use 8 gauge wire with new connectors on both ends (unless using the battery terminal to connect).

--main engine bay fusebox to battery + post (or depending on what kind of battery terminals you use, you might need to run this to the starter + terminal instead). Use 8 or 10 gauge wiring with new connectors on both ends (unless using the battery terminal to connect).

good write-up, but what is "post" Do you mean the battery post? In one of your sentences it says post to battery + post. Im a little confused.

Well, I'm putting the battery in the rear storage compartment and I'm going to put a bulkhead connector through the firewall on the pass side. This should give me a good point with which to bring all these wires together. However, let me see if I'm getting this right. Off my new firewall post I take a lead to the starter and to the main fuse box (the one by the original battery location?) I then take a decent sized wire from the alternator to my firewall post. I'm kinda looking forward to doing this because the stock alternator wire seems kinda undersized.

This might help you a little. No one better laugh. At all. Not even once.

The best way to do it is the first way, but you have to use the type of battery terminals that you can put as many wires on as you want, to allow youto run all 3 power wires to the battery itself.

The other way, much better than doing nothing at all, is for when you use premade battery terminals with cables, that do not allow you to clamp several wires in place; in this case you use the starter + terminal as a junction point, which works fine.

Nobody laugh

A battery kill switch as in, one for racing purposes or anti-theft? between the battery and the connection to the rest of the car's electrical systems. IN your case, moving it to the rear, it'll be easy...youre gonna run a single wire up to the starter, then bolt all the others onto it (fusebox and alternator). So, just put your switch between the battery and starter.

Ok, this may sound dumb, but which wire is the power wire for the fuse box? I see lots of wires coming from the fuse box

Sorry Kevin.....I did laugh a little. Seriously....where do you get the battery post connectors that allow you to attach wires?

This how mines gonna layout. The through firewall connector is the $9.99 bulkhead connector from summit racing or jegs. It will be my common point. For my kill switch I'm just going to interupt the +12v going to the ecu and run it through the switch. This way the car can be shut down by track officals and I can keep my alarm and my radio presets

As for the letter of the law, the switch *should* kill all power to the car in case of a short. But I figure if the battery has a circuit breaker on it and the rest of the wiring is protected by the factory fuse box, it should be plenty safe.

Thanks... Not my first, just my best

but which wire is the power wire for the fuse box? I see lots of wires coming from the fuse box
the big black 80A fuse routes power to everything inside the car. The back side of it is the fused side, or "output" side, that leads in to the car internals. THe front side, closer to the battery, is the power supply or "input" from the battery itself. You'll run your new battery wire here. IT is held on by a 10mm bolt from the side, inside that little door.

where do you get the battery post connectors that allow you to attach wires?
Regular $2.50 battery terminals from autozone.

Ok, after a little delooming of the stock harness I've traced back to the stock ground point on the chassis and discovered which wire goes to the main fuse box. Now I have 2 options. Stop there, cut the wires and splice new wires to reach my bulkhead connector. Or deloom some more to free the power wire from everything else. I do wonder where the alternator wire comes in.

I also want to **** on the grave of the people that sprayed all that undercoating onto my car. Now everytime I need to work on something I get tar and goo all over my hands...ARGH.

I have my loom off and one alt wire goes to fuse box and the other to the starter top post I think. Dont do anything witht he alternator wires. Just take 8gauge wire and connect from fuse box--battery positive. Then 4gauge to starter. Then ground on battery to frame. ( battery is in rear storage bin and theris nice threaded holes 1 foot away from it. Anyways I dont even have my grounds body - engine and it charges and runs great.
