Where can I get a beefy alternator?
Factory and re-built alternators are only 70amps. My stereo is too big and I keep blowing diodes in them. My alternator shop can't beef up my alternator.
Surely some of you all have larger aftermarket stereos.........
Where can I buy higher amp alternators for 2nd gen RX7??

It requires some grinding on the waterpump housing mount you will have to grind 3/8 to a 1/2 inch off the front of the mount and get a spacer in the same thickness for the back. I put it on mine and it works great... Tell them to throw in the pigtail and double v-belt pulley

any drawbacks of doing this? or is the FD alternator with 100amps enough?
I am planning to install my ford tarus E-fan which draws a crazy 40amps while running....
so i don't know if the S5 alternator can handle it.....

I like the cosmo alternator myself .
However I do have 2 FD alts that tested to over 140amps. Im running that same taurus efan off of a stock TII alternator with a redtop, no problems what so ever. However I am going to use the higher output cosmo alternator, I think the one I had tested was at 160amps. .

Forum member Silverrotor sold FD alternator conversions for years and just stopped as of September 1. Lucky for you, he has a few left I think. I'd jump on this quick because after these few are gone, he's not selling any more.

i was thinking, would those "autolite" for FDs work as well?
i mean, if my FC alternator fried, either i go to the junkyard or i go to autozone and get those autolite alternators anyways, so they are "basically" rated with the same amps so it should be the same right?
sorry for hi-jacking, but one more thing is, how do everyone tighten the alternator belt? is there a better way than jamming a BIG crowbar under it and pry it upwards?

The FD alt "almost" bolts on to the S5. I say almost because I had to file a bump off it, which took about three minutes, although maybe not everybody would even have that problem. On the S4 you have to change the plug. Silverrotor is the man if he still has any left.

Yeah, fortunately I DO HAVE a few left. Surprisingy, they are taking longer to sell than I thought though.

I've got an S4 (1988).
Oh yeah, I've just recently calculated that my peak power is only 400W, which is 33A....RMS at 266W, which is 22A. I've had a 20A fuse in line and it hasn't blown in 5 years.....which is odd. That's still quite a pull for factory 70A alternator and it keeps blowing diodes. I've got it wired directly to the battery positive terminal via a fuse link and a toggle switch and grounded to the body. I had to re run all the wires because I blew my factory stereo years ago. Is there a better way to wire the power up? The volt regulator, etc are probably confused because the pull doesn't go through any of the monitoring equipment. I'd love to go in after the ON ignition switch because I have to make sure I turn the toggle off before I get out of the car, otherwise it is dead battery in the morning. Maybe I won't need a big alternator if I wire it up right.....Suggestions?
