where to add auto tranny fluid?

Mines very thin looking, no room to flush fluid nor funds for that much, it's about 1/3rd full, so I was thinking of adding a bottle of some good atf fluid, tranny seems to act funny and slip sometimes depending on how hot/cold it is, which is odd since it has a sort of sweet spot

Add fluid at the "filler" tube according to the owners manual. And according to the shop manual, that's the same as the dipstick tube. Suggest you spend a few bucks and replace the fluid since you are having shifting problems.

few bucks? I went to a few shops they charge 80+ for a fluid change, and I got no where I can do it plus the fluid is probably 25bucks in total.

I don't care for the automatic, when it dies I'll retire the car till i can afford a manual swap

Add it through the dipstick tube. This makes it kind of tough to check the level then because of the fluid dripping down the tube after the fill.

Run the shifter through all the gear positions while sitting still and then check the fluid level with the tranny in neutral.

it was pretty damn low, I'm pretty sure the tranny could take maybe 3 bottles of atf fluid, I dont got a fsm downloaded nor the service book on hand so I just put one bottle in, level is fine now

The tranny shifts MUCH better now, though I do miss it slipping and catching on turns and squealing the tires

I've never had an auto-rx but there should be marks for hot and cold levels on the dipstick. Just ease up to the level because its better to be a little low than a little high.

Theres just a L H bout that far away if the forum keeps it right and your res is similar to mine

or about a inch away from eachother

My level was right at the L, and the atf fluid was very wate rlike, it'll just slide right off the stick after a few seconds

The fluid I put in was much thicker, so I think it'll be okay, I didn't put the whole bottle in, I'll check it sometime soon and see

thats a joke right?

The fc's automatic transmission is absolute ****, it shifts wacky as ****, its gearing is retarded, did I mention it doesnt shift right?

Sometimes I'm afraid to jam into traffic, if you put it in L and push the hold button it normally locks into this odd gear

No idea what gear this is, as mazda says theres only 3 gears, there IS another or something weird, if you WOT in this gear you go maybe 35 and when it shifts its like a slipping clutch, none of the other gears do this

It will pop into this gear randomly on its own too when you WOT from a dead stop, but when you really need a low gear the tranny really doesnt drop down, even if it's in L (which has two gears it uses) sometimes it'll stay in the longer gear causing you to go very very slow until 2.5k rpms, which could mean your rear ended

though it isnt THAT bad for mountian roads, keep it in L or S and theres plenty of power to slide around corners and power through the straight aways at 90

auto rx7 is 4 speed. wit hthe OD. I just put a 5speed in because my auto started slipping in 2nd then was gone 100% within days.and Electrical problems with OD switch and bushings wearing out. the fluid was bad color , And the fins on the cooler got plugged somehow. So now i got me a Nice five speed.... Kept the Original rearend. makes for a long first gear like a supercar would have. But its all good

OP, you're bitching about the auto tranny, yet you don't maintain it? You're bitching about the swap being expensive, but aren't maintaining your tranny? You know not maintaining it will put you out of a car (implied in earlier post)?

What's up? (not bitching at you, just trying some logic here)

Check the fluid level again, when warm. Keep an accurate level, but don't overfill.

If she still slips with the correct fluid level, do not change tranny fluid - just keep a proper level. The reason is, changing fluid when the tranny is already worn will cause it to slip even more, because the old fluid has tons of **** in it keeping some friction on the clutches and bands. Some guys even change a quart at a time, when dealing with old trannies.

Also, bad tranny fluid will have a burned smell to it. This usually means there has been a lot of slipping in the clutch packs.

I've had trannys show small problems and then I've done a fluid change and filter to have the damn thing work even worse.

I only got gas money to put into the car :P if the tranny goes then I'll have the car towed to the back of my bros house and it'll sit there for god knows how many years till I want to bother with it

Shops telling me 1,200-1,400 for a tranny swap, not worth it in my opinion it'll still be a slow n/a rotary

Anyways I checked, I put half a bottle in, which is odd now its all full. I keep checking the stick it goes lower and lower, its probably still in the dip stick tube I guess?

Nah it doesnt smell burned, it was just really really thin, now the fluid is thicker and stays on the dip stick, and the trannys been great now every gear changes strong.

It's only got 80k miles, and it wasnt beaten on till 5k miles ago

Fluid was probably just thin as hell causing it to slip?
