When and What Does It Sound Like When Alternator Belt Slips?

Ok, I was REALLY depressed last night so I hopped in the ol Rex and headed for some twisties in the country. All was goin great, gettin a little sideways, shootin flames, tryin to race a Celica on a lonely highway (damn chick wouldn't go) All of a sudden, I hear this kind of quite squealing. I concentrate when it happens, and the location. I am 99.99% sure it is coming from the engine, and it only happens when I am shifting into 2nd gear. It sounds like a belt squeaking (not throw out bearing, cuz it is less than a week old) So when does the alt belt squeal? I have no p/s or a/c, and I have the stock alt pulley. Thanks guys!!

Have you pulled the Airpump belt as well? Do you have a dual pulley setup? That's somewhat common for single belt setups with no other belts, at high RPMs, the belts will squeal with only one belt (or so I've been told)

Good description Mazda

I have no p/s or a/c. So all i need to get is a dual belt pulley? Cool.

Sounds kinda like a small animal dying. I just replaced all of my belts yesterday. One of them was squealing, and all of them were starting to crack. You can really tell if you rev your engine from the engine bay. It's loud when they squeal, and annoying.

The problem with the dual pulley is trying to find a matched set of belts. So now I got a very short V-belt, 3L220, to go from the wp and main pulley

Well, all my belts are new, so I know the belt itself is cool. Like I said, it ONLY happens when I shift from 2nd into 3rd.

Goodyear 15321

Which translates into

15/32" V belt

32.1" long

Works grrrreat!

The problem with that lawnmower belt is you really can't adjust tension on it.
