When To rebuild

you probably need a rebuild or new engine like, every 5-15 years (depending on how much you drive) or 125k-200k miles. This is assuming oil is changed and filled regularly (it uses oil by design, so it has to be topped off every time you get gas) and all other maintenance is done regularly (hoses, coolant, etc.). Turbos last more near 125k, and N/A's can last over 200k in certain circumstances. Its really no worse than a piston engine, so dont listen to the idiots who tell you that.

Mine lasted 215k with a good bit of track time. Would have lasted longer but I toasted the coolant seals.

You shouldn't have to rebuild it at 100k if you know how to maintence a car.

you should start rebuilding when your engine starts to treat you wrong like coolant seals are blown, etc.

im currently at 150k miles in an 87 TII. The compression may be starting to go. But then i cant speak for the maintenence responsibilty of the previous owner.
