When racing gears grind when shifting

Sometimes when I'm racing and I go to shift from 2nd to 3rd I press the clutch in but it wont go into 3rd. I hear a loud high pitch grinding noise like gears are grinding. This also happens sometimes when i shift from 2nd to 5th. Why does it do this?

best case scenario: you need new shifter bushings

worst case scenario: your syncro's are fucked and you need a new/rebuilt tranny

do you seriously have redsuns stickers on your car?

If you took the time to replace the upper bushing, why not the lower one as well? Hell, while you're doing that, see if your shifter cup is in good condition.

SRSLY, redsuns sticker?

I would guess it is synchronizers. If you race it a lot, they die quickly.

Ive had a s4 and 5 trans both with that same problem, shifter bushings didnt do anything, switching to royal purple gear oil made it a little better but , most likely they need rebuilds.

Odd though...usually the 1 -> 2 shift at redline will almost always crunch...

Erm...because you're not supposed to shift from 2nd into 5th?
That just pisses 3rd and 4th gears off.

if all your synchros are in working order, you can go from 2nd to 5th without a problem. The turbo transmissions are known for having weak 2nd and 5th gear synchros (I havent heard of 3rd going), but if you rev-match (and double-clutch if you're skipping gears up or down ) then you can get it to go into a gear with a worn-out synchro smoothly.

Get some good synthetic gear oil and it might go away. (Redline or Royal Purple)

you only need to double-clutch if you're skipping gears and going into a gear with worn-out synchros. 2nd to 4th you should be fine, but 2nd to 5th you'd need to D-C

Redline MT90 is your salvation. The 5 speed in my Supra was grinding like a **** when I bought it, so I changed out the fluid and put some Mobil1 tranny fluid in it. That did no good but I didn't have money to spring for a rebuild or a new/used one, so I drove like that for forever until I saw a thread about the amazing power of Redline MT fluid, and by golly if it wasn't all true!! I had to buy it online though cause I couldn't find a place locally that carried it.

But seriously... You have GOT to try that ****... and even if it doesn't work, you're only out, what, like $15?

The OP is ******* with anti-lag - see other thread.
No wonder the transmission is going to fall out of the car soon.
