Wheel Offset Vs. Backspacing
<bitch mode>
What the hell ever happened to backspacing? I thought that was the only way to fit a rim. And why is offset measured in mm when the rim width is standard? All this math sucks and it makes my head hurt. I miss the days when you could say "I need a 15x7 with 4" backspacing" and the guy knew exactly what you were talking about. Now you need to divide by 2 then multiply by 25.4... bullshit.

Okay, I'm done bitching.
What is the real reason why we use offset, a relative measurement, when backspacing is an absolute measurement?
Thanks

I ask my self the same thing! offset sucks because if you change rim widths you have to figure out what the new offset has to be. back space will always stay the same no mater what width, since you are always just trying to clear the shocks anyways.

The REST of the world seems to use offset (and the metric system) as a standard.  Most racing in the U.S. seems to keep the backspacing standard.  It's a matter of point-of-view...
