Question Wheel offset question

Im going to be buying rims soon for my car but the offset listed for the rims i want is either 38mm or 42mm. I have an 88 TII and according to Icemarks FAQ's it says my car uses a 40mm offset.
Can the offset be off by a few mm to get the rims that i want? Or do they have to be exactly 40mm?
Thanks.

A couple mm won't matter much if you go with less offset. That will move the tire out away from the strut. As long as you're going with stock sized tires it wouldn't matter either way but I'd just assume widen thetrack as narrow it.
