What's up with the speaker wiring?

Guys, i just bought a sony head unit to install into my 87 GXL.
And when i connect the speaker wires coming from the head unit to the wires going to the speakers no sound comes out of any of the speakers.
Are the speakers int he rx7's amplified? When i wire the head unit "directly" to the head unit then it'll play but it sounds terrible.
I want to have quality sound in my car but don't know what to do.
Should i get a custom installation or just get aftermarket "oem" sized
speakers?
Any recommendation of subs, amps either?

Yes the OEM speakers in the car are amplified. the front speaker's amp is located in the right speaker housing, and the rear speakers have a small amp to their own.

if you wire the Head Unit Directly to the speakers, it should work. But if you are conecting the wires to the stock harnes it goes to the amp THEN the speakers.

Personaly I think you should get some Infinity speakers or Polk. But thats just me.

demending on model you may have stock amp'ed speakers. First thing before you do anything download the factory service manual or buy a copy, this will give you all the wiring pin outs. to turn the factor amps on run a +12v lead from the batt to a relay and then use the 5v remote wire off of you stereo to switch the relay on. Run the output of the relay to the 4 power wire for each amp, don't forget to ground your amps.
hope that makes sense

Your best bet is to remove the factory amps and just let you head unit power your speakers. The stock wiring should be able to handle a 50x4 head, but I would upgrade you speakers. For the money Radio Shack sales some 6 1/2 3ways that sound damn good for about $40-$50.

I've got Infinity's all the way around and an Infinity Digtal Beta Amp pushing a Perfect 10.

you could always check ebay, some good deals sometimes. Your rear deck speakers are 6 1/2" but you have to use the stock amp housing to hold them or make some custom brackets. I if your speakers are in the dash in the front I think they are like 4" or so. I don'k know what size the door speakers are, I don't have those

Under the dash the speakers are 3 1/2s and you can fit 6 1/2s in the rear towers. I'm currently in the process of making door panels that will replace the entire pocket on the doors. The panel is capable of holding up to 6 1/2 Component speakers and it might be able to hold a 6x9. I've been busy and i haven't had the time to work with a lighter material. I made a temp one, out of wood, which i covered in vinyl and it came out awesome. Soon as i get a pair of panels done, i'll have them posted. I had a pair of MB Quarts 6 1/2 Component speakers on my door panels, each getting 100 watts RMS from a PPI Pro amp, and those suckers alone were louder and clearer then my bro's car which has (2) 5x7 Infinity Plates with (2) 6x9 Infinity Speakers. Good luck with your radio installation.

RADIOSHACK = NO GO

I wouldn't buy speakers at radioshack even with your money. You get what you pay for. I don't even think Radioshack speakers do better then stock speakers. Thats my opinion on their speakers. Get a nice pair of speakers for the dash, and if you want full range in the rear, get 6 1/2 in the tower, or even 6x9s in boxes.

And you always want to give the speaker the power they want. If they are 100 watts RMS, Give them it...

Look at RMS or continueous power, not max power.

Radio shack amps say "800 watts", but you'll only get around 100 watts RMS.

it depends on the speakers you get at Radio Shack, most all of them suck, i know, i work there, but the 6 1/2 3ways are not bad at all and better than stock, you'd be susprized.

I recommend a free air sub in the spare (saves space). My '86 had 4" front dash and rear speakers from the factory. See pics on other other thread.

I put component speakers with the tweeters on the sail panel on the door.
