Question what's up with my rear end?

My rear end is making a metallic whinning or metal on metal gear sound. **only when in gear, and only on decelleration**

Also, there seems to be excessive play in the drivetrain between acceleration and deceleration.

I'm hoping it's just a bearing or something loose, but fear my ring and pinion might be worn on the "coast" side due to the fact that you can only hear it on decel.

thanks for any help guys

oh, my lsd seems to work fine.

I'd get it on a lift or jackstands & check for play, & check fluid levels before something expensive happens.

Check the tranny backlash also.
Sometimes the forward motion of the car makes sound seem to come from further back then the actual source.

the noise is only when in gear, therefore it must be drivetrain related right?

Anyone else have noisy rear end? Gear whine?
Again, only on decceleration. That has to mean something.

Yes my 88 LTD turbo has a slight whine when driving but I also have a harmonic vibration that coming from the rear end that is making me crazy. the vibration happens when accelerating at highway speeds and when I get on it it will buzz through the whole car when at high RPM's. I checked with Mazda service and they want over two-thousand dollars for parts alone! So I'm looking for alternatives....

when our old F-150 was doing that, the rear pinion was gone so, if a mazda is anything like a ford its u-joints or the pinion.
and it wont be cheap either.
