Whats this sound mean?

There is a strange soft thumping noise coming from the front of my car, under it. When I step on the clutch, it sounds like it winds down and fades away. As soon as I release the clutch it starts up again. Anyone ever have this happen? Just started this morning when I fired it up. Thanx. TII by the way.
