stop asking so many ?'s

They are clle exhaust diffusers. They are part of the sleeve. Only N/a's have them you can put in TII sleeves when you do a rebuild.

The exhaust baffles are for noise. There is no HP gain by removing them unless you need to make the exhaust ports bigger/louder.

If you remove them the car will be louder ( the opposite of what you want to remove if you are concerned about "quietness")

Is there any beneficial reason to take the exhaust baffles out, icemark? Or is it just another reason to make the car fairly loud - and how loud?

The only benefit removing them is if you are planning on opening up the exhaust port.

Bigger exhaust port with bigger intake ports means more HP.

But just removing them... and replacing them with Turbo ones or no baffle at all??? Just more noise.

6ports wired open

This is off topic, but Christi, why did you wire open your ports if your car is stock? All you did is sucessfully kill 20 HP in the low end. I'm just curious.

LOL, I love that. I saw the previous post.
I think I have a family of them living in my 88 SE and GTU.

The ones in the SE love screwing with the electrical while the GTU ones like mechanical things.

They weren't opening up at all....

Besides losing 20HP, I rarely have the power as it is. Something is causing to have little to no HP, and I can't figure it out. It has excellent handling - but the power just sucks!

car doenst make much hp in the low end. you probably mean torque . and with an s4 of course you need the emissions crap all working to open the ports...if they work at all. wiring them open is simply much easier than any alternatives and the car runs well at the rpms where it is supposed to .

I have to be stupid here , sorry.

But extactly what do you mean by: bigger exhaust ports, with bigger intake ports?

I guess I've got to say , pictures will do me justice here to understand more clearer.

Say, you port your motor, with bigger intake ports.

While in most cases that will give you a decent gain of Horsepower; further increases can be made by even bigger intake ports and then grinding the exhaust ports bigger.

Realistically though, the stock N/A exhaust port size is supposed to be fine up to about 250 flywheel HP. Something that few people have ever gotten out of a N/A without going to radical engine changes.

They were clogged back in June of 2002, and we had got them replaced with another cat..... (dad's decision). Hopefully soon I'll find out.

is the stock exhaust manifold good for anything other than weight?and if not what is the best way to go as far as an exhaust goes in terms of power and driveability?

There is a roll pin in each side of the housing, remove those and they fall out.
