What's the most mpg that can be squeezed out of an NA FC?

Guitarjunkie on this forum has a 400rwhp single turbo FD and he says he is getting 24mpg on the freeway with steady cruising. With that in mind, would it be possible for an NA FC to get close to 30mpg?

I totally don't believe him. SERIOUSLY, a single is a big restriction on the exhaust flow, and he has to be tuned for low AFR's if he makes 400hp...

I don't think you would be able to tune for 30mpg, because your egt's would be way to high. I think dave is running a streetport on his fd, so you might be able toget a tad bit more out of a FC motor with stock ports because of the lack of overlap. But Power output doesn't matter to much because when your curising, your in vac so you can lean it out quiet a bit. Only benfit of the N/A over turbo would be the lack of restriction in the exhuast from the turbo. But bottom line, if yuo tune it lean as hell on a stand alone, you should be able to get some where around 25mpg give or take a mile or two depending on heavy your foot is.

I was able to lean out my rx-2, 300rwhp, in the crusing rpm/vac and get around 23mpg.. but my car is a big box so alot of air friction when crusing.

Hope that helps/makes sense.

Without doing anything to my fc, I routinely manage to get about 24-26 mpg when driving accross western Washington, a long boring straight stretch doing about 75 mph.

You could take apart your transmission and custom fit a really tall 5th gear. That'll drop your acceleration but you'll get really good mileage. This is just one way to go, and honestly I haven't heard of anyone attempting this.

What's the point in squeeeeeeezzzzing that last MPG out of your sportscar?

to do so you'll have to shift at 2500rpm, not use the throttle and generally not have fun. And you'll still get less MPG than someone in a 4banger.
If you don't like spending money on gas, buy a different car, you'll be happier in the long run.

30mpg highway is possible if you mod with that in mind. Freeflowning (no cat exhaust), standalone ecu, light rims, lowered car, 87 sport aero kit, 3.9 diff out of an auto FC (or 88 vert), intake, port matched intake manifold, stock port fresh engine.

You esentially need to lower the drag coef., change gearing, and increase low end torque.

this has been covered before. once thing u need to remember is that turbos add efficiency to the engine by capturing wasted energy that exits the exhaust. So, the more efficient the turbo the better. Now like mentioned before if u tune with MPG in mind you could achive better milage. I do belive that u can achive 27-30mpg with a turbo or even more...

I once got 32 mpg in my 90 vert n/a , but only once. I put 1 gallon in, went 13 miles, walked 2 miles to the phone, 2 miles back to car, and the tow truck went the final 20 to the house. Notice I didn't add in the walking mileage, didn't want to exaggerate any. It's a sports car, 15 mpg and I would have to get married again in celebration. But good luck anyhow.

Hey, what little there is, is still acceleration. We have to get to 150mph somehow.

28 was the peak before MegaSquirt that was on a trip from Blacksburg, VA to Silver Spring, MD, with some WOT to 7.8K, the whole trip with the top and windows down, at 80-90mph. The car is pretty modded.

I'm aiming for 32 peak (highway) on the 'vert. I'm also going to use the MegaSquirt to tune the car on Ethanol (I want a dual fuel car) It's going to use this chevy sensor I got to detect how much Eth is in the gas and adjust AFRs/Timing accordingly.

The problem with the MegaSquirt and economy is that the MS allows me to use my powerband a lot more effectively, plus I rev to 9K now before the power falls off and becomes useless. It changed the car completely.

That means I eat a whole lot more fuel, because my driving habbits changed. I havent bothered to try making another long highway trip to see what peak economy I can get

However, I found that with the right ignition advance, you can run ultra lean on cruise without going too insane on the temps, and not running completely out of power. Downside: I dont know if the engine gets enough premix. I re-enabled my OMP, and hacked it to the setting: "Two washers above minimum"

The TII is a whole other beast. I dont know what kind of MPG numbers to expect, but Eth is very high octane

The TII is on the stock ECU right now and I get a ping every so often, above 4K on anything more then half throttle, even though I'm on premium. Also getting 15/16mpg, mainly because the car WONT STOP BOOSTING. (This is the $200 TII, I have a nice engine waiting to go in)

I will be putting a MegaSquirt in it soon and I will see what kind of economy I can get out of it.
