Eh beats me...

You loose a lot of ground inbetween shifts.

You'll get more power to the ground with the manual, but the cost of the swap is somewhat prohibitive.

if the driver can shift well, then manual is faster, if not, then it's automatic. but personally.... I say, " **** AUTOMATIC!" but that's just me.

Did you hear that the only driver in F1 that can shift faster than their paddle shifters is Michael Shumacker...

Amazing.

auto is generally conceived to be slower than manual, since its a computer shifting, not yourself. And the way an automatic transmission works is alot different than a manual also.

4 gears vs 5 and i can rev my car to what ever i want and slide my clutch so i get a much better lanuch then your torque converter can offer. and if you get a high stall speed converter, have fun driving on the street and also have fun being confined to drag racing.

Well, you guys are overlooking the big picture.

For one, it depends on the intended application(street, woman driver, drag, autox, towing, etc.). More than that, it depends on the engine and vehicle weight.

In general, engines with a lot of torque, or more torque than hp, fair better with automatics. Think 350 camaros and 302 mustangs, and big pickup trucks like diesels. Those engines without a lot of torque down low, but high hp on top end, tend to do better with 5speeds, because you can take better advantage of the top end.

Personally, I wouldnt have a sportscar with anything other than a manual. On the other hand, I dont like a truck with anything other than an automatic (think towing, hauling, ease of everyday driving). Obviously family cars should be auto, and small econo cars could be either but in general fair better as auto's.

The problem comes when the auto tranny itself cant hold up to the job it's being asked to do, like towing, etc. The problem with auto's in 7's is that it is a pisspoor design, and even when one is "right" it doesnt work properly and wont hold up long.

i can attest to what hypntyz7 is saying about the rx7 auto...i have just swapped out my auto into a 5 speed...my car is alot faster and QUICKER feeling..2 different things...as far as the auto tranny i had...i really feel like it swollowed alot of the hp...and it has many times over been called a slush-box...for very good reason....if you go into a turn with an auto and try to accelerate through it...youll just get bogging and revving...but with a manual you can take it in a gear that will allow you to best monitor your rate of acceleration..to optimize what you are looking for.....with the 5 speed you can accel out of the turn and maintain better velocity...but with the auto you seem to carry alot of dead weight too far into the turn and you have to brake to not feel like youll be forced outside of your intended line of travel..due to centrifugal force...cuz your rearend wont give the same response..at the time its needed...and im not even talking about racing scenario...im just talking about making a right turn on the street...at a light..that truns yellow..and you want to carve it out...the 5 speed just allows you to take better control of your car.(this is rx7 specific as far as my personal experience) i also have a 300zx with an auto...i dont experience these problems with the z...the auto is much more responsive..and it just feels like its crisper..as opposed the the 7 auto tranny which feels like its made out of slushy melting ice or sludge..or even better it just feels like when you step on the gas...your stepping in goooo...kind of like running on ice with crisco shoes....eventually you can get a grip..but never when you need it

I'm not trying to pull this threat OT, but I find this virtually impossible to believe. F1 trannies only take like 1/100th of a second to change gears, and that includes perfect electronically controlled rev matching and traction control. Do you have any proof to back up your statement?

Ok last reply to that:

Yeah it was in their F1 magazine. But this was maybe about 6 months ago and technology might have changed since then.

I mean he IS Michael S. Ill link you up if I can find the issue again.

**** i remeber hearing in the early 90s that 300z turbos were faster in auto than manual..just cuz they had a better shift kit installed..meaning that there was no loss of acceleration/torque in the auto or the manual..just that the auto(computer controlled) could shift a little faster than a human..in a manual

5 speed for road racing auto for drag

I believe 5 speed is way better for road racing, here is why. Manuel let you control the car alot better. Also let you keep your revs in the power band so you get the most out of your engine. And let have full control of the drive wheels, which is nice on tight corners. But if you have turbo and doing drag racing auto is better. Because if you hit the brakes and gas it put a load on the engine letter you launch at boost and is way more consistin than manuel. As for me 5 speed all the way, maybe 6 speed some day!!

Im not exactly sure which one is faster. But from experience of driving two of the same exact cars, one auto, one stick, the 5 speed was WAY faster. Plus, its just more fun. Cant do burnouts or churp gears in auto!

supposedly michael schumacker is faster than the sequential (or that was a big joke i wasn't part of), but that's 1 in less than a million. i've also heard that autos are good with turbos since they can keep the rpm up. i don't know the validity to these remarks since i have only owned 5 speeds and never had a turbo. . .
yet!

Well, in drag racing you can use a trans brake on an auto to provide a load on the engine, which will spool the turbo. I believe that's what they were referring to. Obviously not relevant on the street.

Auto trannys have a alot more cons than pros when compared to manuals.

+ Shift points suck, unless you have a shift kit or it was well designed from the factory.
+Most all autos have less gears than their manual counterparts, 4sp auto Vs 5sp man. Allowing the manual to have more gears to work with.
+ Auto trannys weigh more and more complicated and expensive to fix, not to mention even more drivetrain loss
+ Autos usually always have really slow downshifts, it takes a sec for the tranny to downshift after you punch it.

Autos are usually used in drag racing for consistency, and when youre dealing with a car with that much power, you dont need to rev the motor to 3-4K at launch, so that is less of a factor.

i was talking between shifts. you can use anti-lag to build boost on a manual. then there's also your foot on the brake and accelerator to build a load, but that probably wouldn't work too well on the line.
