Typical A/F guages are nothing more than pretty light shows becuase they are based off narrow band 02 sensor voltages. The only worthwile a/f is one hooked up to a wideband 02 sensor, which run in the nieghborhood of $1k and more.

An EGT guage uses its own probe to measure exhuast gas temperature. While very useful for tunning, its not perfect, and is best used with a wideband 02 for perfect tunning.

Well I have this A/F meter http://www.halmeter.com/ Halmeter AF_30 Is this good enough to prevent engine damage? I plan to do tuning on a dyno I just want somthing to warn me if I am seeing unsafe Lean conditions. Yu think this is just a light show? or will it let me know somewhat whats going on with my A/F mixture?

I have a pre tuned E.L Prototypes moddified ECU, hand programed to my engine mod specs.. but I want to have warning in the event that somthing fails and I don't notice.

Actually, A/F guages are quite useful. At a glance, they will tell you if you are reaching the danger zone. No good for tuning, but a good warning device. Saved my *** a few times.

But really you should have both. An A/F guage will tell you how rich/lean you are running at a glance, but the EGT will give you the whole story...

The EGT gauge is too slow to show you a problem in drag race. You'll blow up the engine before you see the temp rise much.

My EGT gauge is useful on the interstate in long races.

I agree completely with Aaron. Depending on where you place your EGT, is dependent on how fast/accurate your reading will be.

A/F gauges are just pretty voltmeters, that’s all. A 30-LED gauge is no more accurate than a 10-LED one (don’t confuse resolution with accuracy), and both will give you the same readings. It doesn’t matter if you spend $10 or $100, the limitation of A/F gauges is not the gauge itself; it’s the sensor. You’re trying to use the sensor for something it wasn’t designed for and is crap at doing. It’ll tell you it you’re rich or lean (that’s all the ECU uses it for), but not by how much.
I plan to do tuning on a dyno
That’s the way to do it.
