Yeah this fixed my problems of broken lines and inherent external oil leakage for free and runs better for sure.

pulled the BAC off, and cleaned it up.. went from a stall at every stop until warm, to an almost perfect idle...

 

bought a 87 TII with a Mazda reman for 250. previous owner was installing a K&N air filter, somehow he unplugged the AFM and didn't know it. tried starting it for days, finally broke down and sold it to me. At his apartment just signed the car's title to me, I pop the hood look around, plugged the AFM back in, started it up and drove away from the previous onwer with a WTF kinda look on his face.

i was having probles with the coolant system. themo sensor exploded so i took out the sensor and plugged the hole. had a rough idle after that, then the t-stat gave out. took it out, put everything back together, running without them fine ever since.

 

My cheapest mod was probably my Manual Boost Control (underneath air pump pulley in picture) which I don't recommend, and have long since removed. I would use a basketball as an air source to adjust it to around 9 or 10 psi.

 

I got my catalitic converters removed for free!!!

 

One of the reasons the stock intake is so restrictive is; the hood prop stows right in the middle of the air path.

Removed stock hood prop and stow a broomstick behind the snorkle.
Cost- free

Another cheap mod - street port, beveled rotors, matched intake runners.
Cost- A day with my Dremmel

 

TB mod.
$1.70 for 2 NPT plugs for the butterfly holes.

 

Removed PS, AC, air pump, emissions, tire, spare, and nearly everything else that didn't make the car run.

I got some:
1. my car overheated this weekend so i removed the thermostat - free
2. I junoed in throught the window and broke the A pillar, superglued it back - free
3. The cruise cont. swich was broken off when i got the car, super glue - free
4. cleaned the air bypass, idels great now - free
5. Sprayed shiload of carbcleaner and fast start down intake - $3.00 (results are questionalbe)

Other mods coming soon to my car:
Gutted cat. (useing broomstick) - free
TB mod - less than $.99
Air intake mod - free

 

Most of the cheap mods done to my car were done by the previous owner. They include: wiring open double throttle plate with zip tie; removing ACV, air pump, and PS, as well as the A/C belt; plus many more I can't think of.
The main cheapo mod I've done was getting a working fan clutch for free at a junk yard, and getting the entire cruise control system for 20 bucks at the same junk yard. Also gotten various missing screws, an intact battery holder and a hood prop holder for free (at the same junk yard).

 

Removed A/C, P/S, Emissions, stereo, speakers, extra brakets ect.. $free

Sheet metal belly pan $6,.. I don't know what happened to the stock one.

My FMIC is suspended by cables for now.. I'll get around to making brakets eventually.

Fuel Pump Re-wire, about $15-20 worth of wire & a $5 relay.

45 deg mandrel bent 3" pipe TID, about $25 including couplers & clamps

 

ok, well as far as cheap/ghetto mods go, I have tons - but only one ghetto repair.

ummm it wasn't too "cheap" but it was the only mod I've done. The car wouldn't start bought a new battery for $79.89 today (first day owning caer) she starts right up. Thanks Rx7club.com for helping me diagnose the problem.

 

i have such a headache with this, but a picture of this hood prop stow or whatever, would get rid of it.

Actually, according to wyallen, who I respect as a god on earth when talking about RX7's (I have even given him the name RX7 cleric), the pourpose behind getting a K&N box filter is so that you DON'T have to deal with getting hot air in the intake. When you drop in a cone shape air filter, usually it is not seperated from the rest of the engine bay and therefore sucks in hot air.
With the K&N filter (the way that I did it) I removed the lid, but kept the cold air intake. By that I mean the plastic thing that's right above your fan shroud. Therefore I have the best of both worlds.
Just to illustrate how much hot air a cone shaped air filter brings in... I was checking out an RX7 for sale this weekend and noticed that the metal intake from the filter to the manifold was touching the heat shield atop the hood and had almost burned it through! Then again, I can understand the logical retort that the tubing leading from the filter to the IM was metal, therefore when contacting the manifold which gets hot because of contacting the engine, it could radiate heat as well.
Either way though, I think cone shaped air filters are dumb when they don't have their own cold air box. I've found my setup to be great sounding and performing
