Cat=Catalytic Converter. It is located behind your exhaust manifold, and before your mufflers. Emissions Standards requires them to be on all vehicles which are to be used on the highway. It basically filters out bad exhaust gases and makes the exhaust more clean. It also robs horsepower because it is restrictive.

Putting a T2 hood on an NA is generally something thats frowned upon within the community here. It kind of falls under the category of makinf people think you have more poines than you really do under there. It is a direct swap though, yes.

is there anyway to check, i heard something about the latch.
i have a 90 gxl and i was wondering, it was a bit heavy....but i did previously own a CF hood
not all gxls came stock with an aluminum hood. some cars had em, some didn't.
Cats (catalytic converters/catalysts) are a 2 part system (there's 2- and 3-way, and a couple of other types, but i'll explain the type i know which i believe is the 3-way type).
the inlet pipe from the smog pump feeds into the center section of the catalytic. the cat has two pieces inside of it with a space inbetween them (the center). the first section is the "oxidizing reduction." it takes the exhaust fumes and removes all the oxygen particles, leaving HC, C, and N. the second part ("oxiding") uses the smog pump to feed itself oxygen, which then takes the passing HC, C, and N to turn it into H20, CO2, and NOx (ideally), but combustion and exhaust is not ideal, so we also have CO and NOx.
if anyone wants to correct any terms or such, be my guest.

please, leave suggestions and comments. we are here to satisfy _you_.

..it isn't hard to tell the difference between steel and aluminum - knock on the hood then, if it sounds denser, more of a "thunk" it's probably steel. aluminum will be more of a "tink". hope this helped.

It was not standard by any means.
And this thread is done... every question has been answered here or if people would search.
