City/back roads I'm in 3rd gear around 3000+, highway/freeway I'm in 4th gear 3000+, or if I can, 4000-5000ish, but that's not always the best idea lol

Screw gas mileage, it's a sports car

back roads are 2800-3500 and the Autobahn is 3000-6000(depends on traffic and speed limit)
don't like 6000+rpm too much cause the tank needle drops fast...very fast

I tend to get better gas mileage the closer I am to 4-5k rpm (n/a), my gas m ileage sucks all to hell if I shift like I'm Miss Daisey.

BTW, do the GXLs have the better tranny, or is the GTU the only NA to recieve it?
3500 is about 80 in fifth. just what have you done to your ratios?

On my TII, 3500 in fifth is about 80 mph. But in my N/A, 3000 is 80 mph...normal?

The tII and n/A have different 5th gears (The GTUs uses the tII 5th gear). I believe it's something like .712 for a n/a and .756 for a tII

City driving, it depends. If I'm slacking around in traffic, I shift at 2000 or below. It's actually possible to creep along with highway traffic jams in 3rd or 4th gear at idle speed. Gives 10-15mph, no power at all, but nice & easy to maintain.

The way I look at it, if I'm at more than 1/3-1/2 throttle trying to accelerate with no significant acceleration, I'm in too high of a gear. I don't see the harm in cruising at low RPMs, as long as you don't ask for much acceleration (lugging the engine).

Damn right, the car will drive itself if you do it right.

2500-3000 for non-highway speeds (in 3rd or 4th depending on traffic)

2500-3500 on highway in 5th, depending on traffic

seems like the cruising 'sweet spot' on NA is 3000rpm give or take 500rpm

Exactly. My 89 GTU: @ 3000 in 5th about 70 mph.
