What is your average cruising RPM?

In the search for better fuel economy, I've been following the shift light to see if it makes any noticable difference. The only problem I've been having with it is that sometimes it has me cruising at 1500rpm and I don't know if that's safe. :D

2000-2500. Anything below that and theres no power with the pedal to the floor (depending on gear).

3300 or so, for 35 miles straight, twice a day...

Lol, that's about 100mph or so on my GXL, how fast are you going? :D

BTW, do the GXLs have the better tranny, or is the GTU the only NA to recieve it?

WAYNE88N/A 06-29-04 10:24 PM

About 75, I've got the S4 base, and have a little smaller diameter tires than stock, the resulting "gearing ratio" gives me a hell of a 4th gear acceleration to pass all the idiots that like clogging up the left lane, and the occasional "freeway race" :)

paintrfrmdiego 06-29-04 11:52 PM

its rotary for cryen out loud, let those engines wind up, especially on someone else

MRX_Rotary 06-30-04 12:24 AM

If I'm not accelerating or decelerating, I like to keep it between 2500 and 3500 rpm.

gergrx7 06-30-04 12:38 AM

between 2500-3000 45-60mph in city and 3000 around 80 highway.

Syonyk 06-30-04 12:39 AM

I try to keep my 88 SE under 3500 in 5th cruising on the highway...

City driving, it depends. If I'm slacking around in traffic, I shift at 2000 or below. It's actually possible to creep along with highway traffic jams in 3rd or 4th gear at idle speed. Gives 10-15mph, no power at all, but nice & easy to maintain.

The way I look at it, if I'm at more than 1/3-1/2 throttle trying to accelerate with no significant acceleration, I'm in too high of a gear. I don't see the harm in cruising at low RPMs, as long as you don't ask for much acceleration (lugging the engine).

Anywhere from 2800-4k rpms. Depends on the weather. Rain gets the low end of the range and the dry summer days get the high end. Normally its in between ~3300.

3000-3500 but i have no idea how fast i go, speedometer cable gets loose all the time so i dont even bother w/it

kel 06-30-04 08:10 AM

Mostly 3krpm. It seems very comfortable there.

91_fc 06-30-04 08:39 AM

between 2 and 3K.

Tofuball 06-30-04 08:56 AM

I shift right before 3800RPM and when given the chance I will cruise at 3300RPM. On long highway trips I'll go between 3300RPM and 3500RPM.

davescustomperformance 06-30-04 11:15 AM

Honestly, I like it keep the engine about 4000. This could explain why I'm always breaking stuff, but since my 6-ports are wired open, it just seems like such a dog at anything below that. Plus you have advantages of being anywhere about 3500 rpm... ;-)

Grimlock 06-30-04 11:31 AM

well...

cruisin on the streets i keep her around 3000-3500rpm - i like the power there :D

on the highway i keep her around 3500-4000rpm

thats cruisin. when i want to get her open (which is often) i take it to 6000-6500rpms. this is a 89 gtu by the way. i would put royal purple and redline her every damn day all the frekkin time but i got a bad rear seal leak (pissin me off).

Relisys190 06-30-04 12:28 PM

With the current set-up on my LT-8 i have my cruise maps set to pull about 8% fuel from the injectors anywhere above 3000 rpms.

I cruise on the open highway anywhere from 3500-4000 rpms. Also with the LT-8 the secondary injectors are NOT fireing like the factory system (above 3800) Once the system goes into cruise mode (senses that throttle input, injector flow, ambient air temp and engine speed have not changed for 6 seconds) the system trips over to cruise mode and the secondarys are set into "stand-by". Unless i apply 20% or more throttle input i am running on my primary 460cc injectors, even above 4000 rpms!

I drive 60miles EACH WAY to work and obtain a healthy 22-23 miles per gallon at 90-95 MPH. 3000 rpms in 5th is 80mph, and 4000 rpms is 101-102 mph in my GXL with factory tires and factory diff.

Regards,
-Markus

i run it @3,000 rpm's on the freeway (30 miles each way)I never really let it go below 2500rpms just cruizing around town

Grimlock 06-30-04 12:36 PM

forgot to mention...

i drive to orlando almost every weekend from miami. ive done it in a rental (2004 4 banger neon) and my 7 (89 gtu). i notice that cruising between 3000-4000 it only takes me 3/4's of a tank for the drive. almost exactly the same as the rental. i was impressed, considering 7's are gas guzzlers. the trip comes out to about 240 miles.

now if only gas prices would drop...$30+ to fill my tank

I keep it between 2000 and 3000 - but the damn "shift up" light pisses me off... o well - just ignore it =P

Terrh 06-30-04 03:33 PM

when I'm putting around.. I generally shift at between 2300and 2500.. cruise between 1500 and 2000. (in town).

it's really hard to cruse at 2000RPM on the highway unless you want to go 50mph... no thanks!

I haven't killed the motor yet, and thats with driving like this (5th gear at 40mph) for 2 years.

The Spyder 06-30-04 03:33 PM

3500 in 5th :).

Na more like 2500 at 55

SonicRaT 06-30-04 03:39 PM

4k rpm. God damn GTUs... :)

Thank god that went away when i dumped the factory stuff. I always hated that little "SHIFT UP" light that would come on after 2500 cruising...
