what year rx7 should i buy?

I am looking to get a fc3s rx7. I will be heavily modifying it, as far as the suspension and engine go. Basically, i want to create a good track car, one that is light, and with quite a bit of NA horsepower. I was thinking about a 1990 GTU, and sending the engine in to get rebuilt, seeing as the car i was looking at had a blown engine, and getting the engine bridgeported while i was at it. Are there any model years that would suite me better for this type of application? i want to obtain about 250rwhp without a turbo. any help would be greatly appriciated.

Most people agree that the GTUs is one of the best NA models but they are pretty rare. 250whp will be hard to achieve without getting a enormous port job. It most likely wont be streetable.

this is basically going to be a racecar, i am going to strip it, and eventually install a roll cage, i dont want to use a GTUs because it is a collectors car and i see no reason in tearing one apart. thanks for the input though. I was more concerned about the engine components. which engine is more suitable for heavy porting? the S4 or the S5?

I would say S5 since it has lighter rotors allowing for higher redling, the intake maninfold also has better air flow then S4. And it also has 160 hp stock.. 14hp(?) more then S4.

S4 with S5 motor- lighter body with aforementioned lighter rotors/higher hosepower. Since you are building it from scratch.

If you want a light car do a 1st gen with s5 motor, way lighter after reduction and it has a solid rear axle- *** sliding fun..........

The S5 intake is less suited than the S4 for porting. Specially major porting that will be needed for 250whp

My suggestion is to get an S4 with an S4 block but put in S5 rotors for the light weight and high compression. Then do a large street port with a small bridge on the auxilary ports. Use a Sport chasis for it. It is light weight and already has the 5 lug suspension and stiffer ride not like the base or SE.

yeah, 1987RX7guy is correct.

The S4 Sport or 88 GTU will be a better choice for what he wants to do.

The N/A S5 intake manifold does not lend itself well for porting. It is already pretty highly optimized for under 200 FWHP. An extrude hone flow porting or minor other street porting is about all that he can do.

Why in the world would he want a heavy GXL with its funky go-bot suspension, sunroof, rear wiper, and all the other crap the GXL came with??? Way too heavy, way too many extras for building a track car.

And if you are building a track car, you don't ever want a sunroof. You want as much head room as possible so you can fit in it with a helmet on.
