Question What year 13B

I am offered a 13B engine that according to the seller came out of a 89 GSLSE. AFAIK the GSL-SE was the 84-85 first gen top model so I wonder if anyone knows how to determine the year of the engine by it's serial number, or if not, other marks or features distinguishing one year from another?

Any advice appreciated,
Thomas

umm.... i don't think the 2nd gens came with GSL-SE. That IS only 1st gen. as for determining differences, i have no clue. verify what year it came from

I have lots of experience working on all kinds of cars from old SAABs and Volvos to Alfa Romeos and Citroens but I'm new to this rotary 'thing' so please bear with me if some of my questions are obvious.

The 13B engine that I am talking about would be installed in my 84 GS. From reading the archives I understand that the front cover from the current 12A will need to be swapped over and that if it is 86 or newer I'll need the oil pan from a 84-85 GSL-SE. What I don't know is if there is a year of NA fuel injected 13B that would work better for this swap or if they are all the same? I understand some of the engines are rated at 140 hp and some are rated at 160 hp, is there any reason not to get the 160 hp version?

Of course I'd still like to be able to tell what year car the engine originally came out of, so if there is a way to tell please tell me.

Thanks

I thought GSL-SE's were all FI, I could be wrong though.

I don't know exactly what you are asking......I have never done/looked into this swap so I cannot help you much.......the GSL-SE was the first FI RX7 and it had the 13B which was carried into the 3rd Generation. Of course as the years pass they improve on whatever problems may have been encountered....so a 13B from a Series 5(S5 from '89-91) should essentially be better than the Series 4(86-88). From 86-88 the N/A engine had 140 HP.....while the Series 5 had 160 HP... the whole problem will come from the wiring if you cannot find a matching harness to plug into the ECU and then the body electrical......

The 13b in the 84-85 GSL-SE was FI, not carbed.... i believe there was a difference with the injectors, not sure of specifics.

ah.... put the crack pipe down... the 84 and 85 GSL-SE 13B only came fuel injected in North America.

Now the 80-85 GSL came with a carb... maybe you are confusing that.
