What would you guys do?
welp, i'm getting close to getting my RX-7 but my dad wanted the car to be checked out by a friend of his who is a prof. machanic and just now, he told me dad how rotary engines are unreliable and break all the time and what not. The one i want to get just had the engine rebulit FOR ME because i wanted to buy it. I understood that rotary engines tend to be a little more senstive but i wouldn't exactly say they are just full of problems like he describes it. The guy i'm buying it from sells parts or something and i trust that he knows what hes doing with RX-7s (he's owned quite a few). It's got some ground effects, just proff. cleaned, engine rebuilt and ported, and some other stuff. What do you guys think? and what should i tell my dad?

yo man, whatever my 83 went to 260000 miles before it blew up(then i put another motor in) and didnt really have any major probs with it!! now my 86 runs excellent with no body rust at all, it has 100000 and still running like new!! just keep up the maintance on them babies and they will treat u excellent!! PEACE!! hope this helps, cya!!
I had the same problem with my Dad, I just told him how I was going to be doing all the work on them, and they aren't unreliable, just normal mechanics don't know dickshit about them, and blow them up doing something wrong. Just tell him stuff about how it is going to be a hobby of yours to maintain the car, and you want to learn more about it. Worked for me!

thats waht i thought. So, just basic up keep will keep it running nice right? Changing oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, checking fluids, reving up to line once in a while, and rebuliding every 60k (prolly wont even have the car by next 60k
), and not letting the engine flood will pretty much do it correct?

Unreliable? Hell no! My '91 N/A has 129,000 on the stock engine and transmission. I've had no problems what-so-ever, it's still going strong and I'm the original owner. Just give it good, routine maintanence and it'll rock on for a long time.

Just tell him they are unreliable if not taken care of, and go do some research on how the engine works and explain to him the benefits of having a rotary. Also tell him that the engines are still in application
, my grandpa wanted to tell me that nobody used them anymore and that the newer rx7 and mazda 787B wasnt a rotary. Just work the positives and learn to read wiring diagrams, because most likely your going to have atleast one electrical problem whichwill call upon a service manual

Tell him it's a 4 cylinder that can easily run over 125k miles, that they are more reliable then regular pistons due to less mechanical parts to wear down/break, and that the only time they become "unreliable" is when you start to modify engine parts.
