fix a ton of stupid old car bullshit with brand new OEM parts if available: a new doorhandle, a new door lock cylinder, a bunch of trim pieces, and a new bumper

Listen man, you drive an FC, probably not a immaculate one, and you don't have alot of money, but you do love your car. I'm not sure whether I'm 100% correct there, but I think that is pretty close. Put that 1K aside, and try to find another 1K. Keep it in a little FC development/crisis box. The time will come something breaks, you crash it or whatever. If you run across soemthing you realy f=want for the FC you can take a couple of bucks out of it aswell. If you loose your job, you can also take out a couple 100 bucks each month to get by. I still go to school and I have the same thing, I would hate to have to sell the FC if anthing unexpected happens.

I have the same little "development box" but mine is used for bail money. Think of it as personal development.

But seriously, this is a good idea. Having to sell your FC because something broke thats out of your ability to repair would suck. This way, if your driving home from school/work one day and the tranny decides its going to take a dump, your not stuck driving around for a few weeks/months trying to save up funds to replace your broken tranny thats costing you more and more money.

A little personal experience: My 1st motor took a dump back in august of 08. I didn't have funds to replace the motor until Jan of 09 because the blown motor was costing me so much in gas and oil it was eating. I honestly want to say that back then, when gas was at 1.80-2.10 a gal, I was putting easily 100-150$ in my car a week. Had I saved up some cash, I could have dropped a motor in the next weekend, but alas, my development box was empty.

My "development box" is a 95 s10.

My advice is don't go ******* with your car unless you have a back up car because even if you have money set aside there is down time associated with a broken car which could mean missing work and in extreme cases even losing your job.

If you have another car and you have $1000, I would go with a standalone, this is an excellent foundation for any further modifications.
