resale and value , wise the 89 will win out for sure....

however if i remember correctly in 89 the "gtu" is the s5 base model, its 5 lug but has the single piston brakes, and no spoiler or areo package.

the 86 sport comes with the big brakes, and better suspension, as well as the functional areo package, wing and flares...)

id say the sport is a better "racing car" as it should handle and brake a bit better than the s5 gtu.... ( the gtu makes more hp but also weights more so that power is lost in weight)

so it all comes down to PRICE/RESALE VS BRAKES/SUSPENSION/AREO KIT

if the 89 is in good shape id take it just because its worth more, heck you can allways swap the big brakes and ect onto it later on. ( thats what i did!! )

No question at all, the 86 Sport.

The 86 Sport- is faster than the 89 GTU (Road & Track got a Sport down to 7.6 seconds 0-60 back in late 85) the best any S5 non turbo did was a 7.8 and that was the GTUs model.

86 Sport much more aerodynamic (.29 Cd vs .32 Cd)

The 86 Sport is a vastly superior racing vehicle over the pig heavy S5 GTU.

The 89-90 GTU was 200+ lbs heavier than the Sport, had a softer suspension, had the smaller single piston front brakes and not even vent rear brake rotors, has mouse belts, had heavy insulation package, and numb engine speed sensing power steering (instead of the vastly superior vehicle speed sensing steering found on the Sport and Turbos).

The 89 GTU would only be a choice if you didn't know better.
