What wold it take???

I have an 86rx7 that I just did a TII swap. Everything engine, tranny, and driveline... My cousin's Boyfriend has a 70 mustang fastbback that he just put a high performance 302 in. We want to race each other... I'm curious what it would take for me to take him. We're not going to race till after winter so that gives me a few months.... What mods do you all suggest I do so I can beat him???

Depends on his car... More info would be great. "High performance 302" doesn't tell us much.

The mustang he said just has a high performance 302 in it.... The car is stock as far as I know but I know he plans on putting headers and a dual exhaust on it and then change the wheels.... IDK he might run street slicks...

it all depends on the engine. high performance as in rebuilt but stock? or is it cammed, stroked, bored. if tis relatively stock you would probably take it. if its built then im not so sure. just "high performance" doesnt mean anything.

It's impossible to say what you need if you don't know what he has?

As far as the information given, the best answer anyone could give is:
"As much hp as possible"

Vague? Yes...

What is your budget? How badly do you want to beat him? Your question has been asked before. If you really want to win and have a strong budget you have no worries. If you have no money and are completely stock then it is time to start saving up. A performance 302 doesn't tell anyone anything. So no one on this forum can really help. Do you know hp numbers? Torque Numbers? Do you know anything about his car?

get a Rtek 2.0,, BNR stage 3 upgraded turbo. front mount intercooler. 3"downpipe and catback exhaust.. 720cc secondary injectors.. walbro fuel pump.. and turn the boost up to about 13psi.. that should relativly lock you in for a win.. and itll pull like a mutherf****r!!

340HP. They also sell 450HP 302's, but I'm gonna guess anyone boasting about displacement bought the cheapest performance 302 he could get.
The ~450lb. 302 probably weighs about the same as the stock engine, meaning you're looking at a weight of about 3550lbs.

So... you need 340/3550*2800 = 270HP. 275HP if you add 200lbs. for driver weight, etc. Shouldn't be too hard to acheive on a TII.

Or you could take him on a twisty road and annihilate him.

If he means a run-of-the-mill rebuilt stock 302 then you could whoop him in an N/A RX-7.

Good news: that year Mustang was one of the heaviest made.
Your FC with full exhaust show smoke him, cause you have a 13-second potential ride versus his barely 14-second potential POS.

Reality:
Drag racing isn't as easy as you think it is, especially if you haven't done it.
If we're talking STREET RACING, that makes it even worse.

I dunno what you have in mind, but if you're going to STREET RACE...try not to kill anyone else while you're trying to kill yourself.

These kinds of threads are a royal waste of our time, and there is no definitive answer.
The threads usually go to ****.
Right now, you have an edge.
The question is...can you take advantage of that?

Also...
GROW UP.

Uh..if your going to pay $775 for a Stage 3, why not just go the extra mile and get the Stage 4, for $925? $150 isnt much..and it is definitely worth it. Better yet, skip the POS RTek 2.0, and get a worthwhile computer (like the Megasquirt, etc.)

Are you recommending he keeps the catalytic convertor? That'd be a total waste. 3" Turboback, or leave it stock.

Not to mention, those 720cc's will most likely not be ANYWHERE near enough for anything over a full flow-modded stock turbo car.

302 cubic inches equals 5.0 liters. That doesn't help, hehe.

If it's just an old 1970 rebuilt 302, you'll whoop the pants off him without any upgrades. If it's the 1970 rebuilt high end 302, you'll match him without any upgrades. If it's a new one, Ford currently sells 340HP ($4300), 360HP ($5800), 390HP ($6200)and 450HP ($8600). You'll need 275HP (~235wHP) on your turbo to match 340HP. Stock s4 turbo engine (1986-1988) is 180HP, s5 (1989-1992) is 200HP.

Here's the site that sells them:

where in my post did i say keep the catalytic convertor? and the 720cc's work perfect on my car. i dont even have any fuel computer.. stock TII computer with a T70 turbo running 7.5pis.. no cats.. 3" piping from the turbo to the muffler. and a walbro. been running really reliable for me for a long time..

And you think all those "kids" who street race and kill people (or kill themselves) go out and think "we're going to kill ourselves and possibly kill innocent bystanders" too?

NEWS FLASH!
They all probably thought the same way you did...
