what is this wire?

Hey Gang,
I am installing a new starter on my '87TII and noticed a wire hanging. The end of it is dangling right behind (or in front if you're referencing the car) of the starter solenoid. It is about 6in long with a white connector going into the harness. the dangling end has a lug for a 10mm bolt (like the solenoid) and a square block on the wire end of the lug.

anybody know where this goes?

THX

It doesn't look like a ground. It's about 18-20 gauge and goes into the harness just in front of the firewall. The lug end looks like maybe the square thing could be a heat sensor....maybe. I dunno.

If it is a square block with single wire coming from it and a bolt hole on the other end, that is the condenser for the Oil pressure guage. It is supposed to be under one of the clutch slave cylinder bolts.

Thanks Vince, that's it. It would likely explain why my oil pressure gauge quit working.

I appreciate the help!

if it quit working you could have burned something up. that condenser if there to protect the gauge if the sending unit goes out

so would this cause false readings? I just noticed that wire too(actualy you guys beat me to asking about it... so this saves me time ) Before I got mine, I was told the clutch slave and master were replaced and that the sender went bad was replaced, could my gauge be fubar? Sometimes it reads lower and then sometimes higher than normal...

Would it be ok to find another spot to ground it at?
thanks

That's possible. I had the front and read oil seals replaced a few months ago and the gauge quit several weeks later (i was on the highway when i noticed....scared the stuff outta me). Could be the mechanic missed bolting this thing down.

I'll hook it back up and see what I can find.

the condensor hanging wouldn't cause the gauge to not work but it should be mounted up at the clutch clave cylinder. most people overlook the plug on the oil pressure sender itself.. it can also get filthy with dirt and oil so it may not have good contact.

what if the spade plug got ripped off and now its just a loose wire? will it still help to ground it to something?

Do you seriously think grounding a bare wire is a good idea? This is not a ground wire! If you're lucky you'll pop a fuse but I'm pretty sure you'll fry the oil pressure gauge first.
