I had the cables hooked up backwards and as soon as we hooked them up it started sparking and the starter starting turning the engine, but I think we had them wrong at the starter too. Lots of sparks though, and the cable was welding itself to the battery. There was no permanent damage, but it's not something I recommend you do for recreation.

I have done this befor and all it did was blow a fuse.

However, I have heard of people loosing their wiring harness and ECU.

I guess it depends on how long you have it hooked up and whether you crank the engine or not.

I saw a guy hook an arc welder to a battery thinking that the welder was a battery charger!!! A lot of smoke but no real damage. I believe the ground wire smoked up and had to be replaced. I didn't look too closely.

The ECU could become damaged, alot of electrical connections could fry instantly... Small relays in misc switches "could" be damaged..

Battery "could" explode throwing liquid everywhere, melting your eyes out, skin damage... car fire

Just alot of BAD things

Sure! if the terminal decides to suddenly WELD itself to the point where you can't pull it off... It's just generally a bad idea. Allthough IIRC there's a fuse that "should" kill itself before anything that bad happens.
