Ok, i dont have a dremel OR a die grinder, but i am planning on porting my intake manifolds this weekend.

I do have a drill, is there any kind of bit/head i can buy that'll do the job (what kind)? Me and protege menace are gonna do this. He has an angle grinder (not much help either) and the tools needed to polish it .

So what can i use then? any help is appreciated! !

 

dremal bits will fit the drill if you can get it in there. Takes a llot longer seeing how the drill is a lot slower

 

Im sure i have some tol we can use, i have corded and cordless drills, a brand new angle grinder, maybe have a dremel but i think we returned it, we have a drill press, and some other tools... i ened the name of the bit to use as well, carbide i am guessing, but what should i use....

You don't need to use a carbide- it's only aluminum....
though it will go a litle quicker.

Just go to any hardware store or whatever and they'll have tons of grinding wheels on 3/8 inch shafts just for drills...
Just be carefull when using grinding wheels instead of carbides, as they can melt soft metals and fill with aluminum.. it's actually better to go slower (like a drill, not a dremel)
Don't stay in the same spot for very long, move it around a lot- it'll keep it from melting and packing up.

No, that should be about it. When I ported mine, it took alot longer than I expected it to, to get everything right and smooth. But after I did it, Im kinda wondering what the point was, because you can only get to the ends of the manifold, so the middle of the runners is still stock..so whats the point really?? Not sure if It made any noticable impovements either. I wouldnt do it again.

 

oh yeah, whill i have all this **** off, what else should i do down there? I'm not doing the TB mod cuz it doesn't gain any actual power..... looking more for useless things that are convenient to removed when all taht **** is off

 

What to do without a dremel??? Hmmmm buy one. hahaha........ sorry couldnt help it.

 

Take you EGR off and clean it out. Mine was soooo clogged, and I didnt even know it till I took it off for the hell of it.

 

They said about 5-10+ HP depending on how much porting you did. Everyone in this thread said they were VERY pleased with it

BTW- mazdaspeed7's engine was STOCK port at that time . I believe that this WILL make a noticable difference.

 

Dremels aren't all that expensive. I have the Craftsmen version, and it came with a case and several different bits and I think it was only about $30. Well worth it. Sometime I want a cordless one, too.

Drills also work as you can buy bits for them. The intake manifold on my PGT was ported primarily with a drill, smaller areas done with the dremel.

 

K, i'm going to home depot tomorrow and buying bits/heads/sand rolls. I'm gonna be using a DRILL instead of dremel (cuz i'm NOT spending money on one).

Any special names of tools i need (like specialty heads/bits)? Do I HAVE to buy carbide? i'm only doing this to one (mine) car. won't steel tips last long enough for it, or do i NEED the expensive carbide?

 

Geez, dead set for using a carbide eh??
Keep in mind they are pretty expensive, and if you are turning it with a drill, it really won't do crap.
If you are using a drill, use a grinding stone, they are only a couple bucks, as opposed to the 20 bucks for a quality carbide. (10 bucks more and you can buy a Dremel- they are indespensible too- you'll always need one.)


As for porting results... I don't know what differences it made for me, since I did mye ENGINE at the same time!

Technically, it's just port matching- not actually porting.

 

No, i dont wanna use the carbide, i just wanted to know if i NEEDED it, which i dont. i'll just use the grinding stone.

pp13bnos and mazdaspeed7 both said the gains were incredible like "better than a true dual system" (which is supposed to gain ~30% hp).

mazdaspeed7 engine was NOT ported when he did this mod and said that he gained AT LEAST 10hp .

Any other last minute tips before i dive into this?

 

Don't expect too much. Seriously.
You might get a bit near redline... be happy if you can actually notice it!

 

Dre: If you got off the Forum long enough to join the club, I'd let you use my air compressor and die grinder for free... or my Dremel.

Dremel and a cutter are the ticket. Porting my TB (with TB mod) right now.

The TB mod is not as much for power as for throttle response and faster spooling. Besides, it only takes about 15 minutes, if you don't count the time it takes the JB Weld to dry.

Seriously though, I never thought I'd need a Dremel, but I've used that thing so many times it's paid for itself. And I burned one up not too long ago too...

Seriously though, this is the kind of thing real life clubs are good for. Forum = lots of info. Club = lots of help.
