Uh you just want to get the gunk out of the sock, till its clean :P
I'd put some acetone in a waterbottle and squirt it from the outside in and try to get everything to come out

About my sock: The sock was clear/yellow and not filled with black gunk or whatever. It was in my opinion, more like varnished over. So I had a can of acetone and let it sit overnight in acetone. Then the next morning blew it out with a air hose.
By varnished over, I mean you could lift the pump/sock out of the fuel tank, and the filter/sock would hold the fuel out of the tank and hardly dribble out of the sock.
That's been a couple of yrs now and it's never died of fuel starvation during left hand turns since.
Just changing the sock would be simpler.

I too thought it wasn't possible since to me it was only happening on sharp left turns. When I pulled my pump the tank was pristine inside, and the sock looked fine (really it was a plastic screen cage). I blasted it anyway and the problem went away.
I think the sock can collect varnish-like deposits that hinder fuel flow. This seems like the only explanation to me.

Yes the stock sock gets how hailers said.
After I cleaned mine I noticed nothing, sure I could get a new one but mazda is far away and none of the local parts stores had one in stock, screw waiting.
Mine did have some black stuff looked like sand kinda, it also retained TONS of gas when I pulled it out, had to hold it there for quite a bit letting it drain.

just to update i changed my fuel sock with an "airtex" fuel sock i got at advanced auto parts and it was smaller than my stock one but fit perfectly and not only does my car not have that problem with left turns anymore but i was having issues with my car starting without having to pump the gas or hold it down. starts up like a dream and drives like a dream! the old fuel sock was discusting and brown! thanks for the tips guys!
