What type of shocks do you use?

Looking for aftermarket shocks, when I get my coilovers. What do you guys use, and how do you like them?

I've heard nothing but good things abot the KYB AGX's.

I plan on getting those as soon as the wallet allows to cure a nasty case of the wheelhops. Sucks not being able to do a burn out

I have got the KYB AGX's with racing beat springs and the handling is awesome and there is a wide range of setting for the shocks.

Tokico non-adjustables with Eibach pro kit. Nice firm sorta comfortable ride. If I had it to do over again, I would have gotten adjustable front struts.

The current setup is a bit soft in the front end on hard cornering. My non adjustables are fine for the rear.

I also got a strut bar. Makes a big difference.

KYB GR2 front, KYB Gas Adjust rear all on GC coilover conversion kit. They are firm but perfectly fine for everyday use, less jarring that Konis and cheaper than tockico. they will handle VERY stiff springs real well (the eibachs in the GC kit are 2.5 in race springs, i got a set one step stiffer than the standard kit). no bouncing (a sign that yer shock isnt damped enough for your spring or that its toast). did i mention they are cheap? i would have gone for AGX's when my rear drivers side blew out after about 50K miles but they are lifetime warranted so the re-order was free

I use Tokico Illuminas with Racing Beat springs. ride is a little stiff, and small bumps feel like huge potholes, but it handles really well.

I've had Tokiko Illuminas and Eibach Pro-kit springs on my 90 GXL for about the last 4-years. Last month, I replaced the Illuminas with KYB AGXs. The AGXs appear to be better shocks. They have a higher range of adjustability compared to the Illuminas. I have the AGxs set to 1 out of 4 (front) and 2 out of 8 (rear). This is what KYB suggests is equivalent to stock shocks. When I had the Illuminas on the car, I had the front set to 4 or sometimes 5 and the rear set to 3 or 4. IIRC, the maximum setting was 5. The AGX's are also much more reasonably priced compared to the Illuminas.

jon88se> How do the GC coilovers fit. The guy at the store today tried to convince me that the rear shocks have the spring and the shock seperately. I don't think he knows what he's talking about. He also tried to convince me GC doesn't make a kit. Oh yeah does anyone know if GC has an e-mail address?

OPEC>how do you like your set up. I was going to do the same thing but get the tokico performance struts instead of the illuminas.

of course GC makes a kit, the RX-7 is one of their premier cars...its an easy install and fits well, works great!! sure, its not like buying a real set of coilovers like Tein or JIC but its more than enough for a street car/weekend car (i took off my suspension tech springs in favor of the GC conversion or I woulda gotten a full Tein setup...already had the KYBs though and loved em!!)

OPEC, your car is beautiful!! those wheels sit absolutely PERFECTLY!!! what size are they? what size tires?? makes my 215/45 /17 fronts and 235/45/17 rears downright wimpy...what size wheel? mine are 17X7 with a 40 offset...1/8 inch spacers in front, 1/4 inch rear (4 bolt hubs). when I turbocharge I want some new wheels (volk RG's) and I wanna know what offset and size wheels/tires to use. (even though its a four bolt vs. five bolt the offset is the same for each hub)

I use Tokico illuminas (adjustable) on all 4 corners with Tokico Springs. The car is lowered about 3/4 to 1 inch. The ride is just fine, not harsh at all and the handling has improved dramatically. I got the a package with springs and struts that was made to work together.

Link to the Kit I have.

How low will any of these shocks let you go? And how much spring can they handle? I was thinking of getting a set of AGX as a temporary setup until I could afford either Koni D/A or the GC Advanced Design Strut. But the car will have 450/350 lb spring fr/rr and be lowered about 2". I'd hate to blow the shock on my first outing.
Madaz07, do you have any more info on the KYB Hillclimb? I've never heard of them.
TIA

I have the Mazdaspeed Stage II racing suspension on my FC. I really like it. The shocks are Koni coil-overs with the Mazdaspeed mounting kit, Mazdaspeed camber/caster plates, Eibach ERS 2.5"ID 7" springs front & 10" springs rear, as well as other suspension components. Whatever you get, I recommend camber/caster plates to take full advantage of your coil-overs.

I don't know of any GC e-mail address, but here is their web site:

Is that for an FC or a Hummer?

I know quite a few honda guys who track their car that run amounts that high on street cars.

Ditto Evil's setup Although I'm switching to heavier springs all around, 500/325, to see if I can tone down body roll a bit more.

Oh, it's for a Honda, my bad. LOL

Seriously though, 450/350 is a bit on the stiff side for a road race FC, and 2" is a pretty big drop for a car that is expected to handle. Just for comparison, the standard Mazdaspeed full-race setup uses 400/275. Most of the popular brands of street performance suspension use 120-150 linear-rate springs with about a 1" drop.

LOL, isn't 500lbs the stiffest spring set that Mazdaspeed carries? Are you sure that your "body roll" isn't the tire sidewalls giving in? Hehehe.
